Boats not use sonar anymore?

My husband reckons with all the equipment, radar etc on those boats now, he could sail one without crashing and he's blind. :D

Fuck off! The Captains on these vessels are highly trained in using all the equipment properly. No one knows exactly what happened so don't judge anyone until you know the full story!!

that was totally unneccersary.

clearly something has gone wrong ... but there is no need to be so aggressive.

It just pisses me off that people judge so quickly.

unfortunately that's what this forum tends to lead to, if you want substantiated news then i suggest you stay off the forum and listen to the normal news channels.

I wasn't actually judging. I haven't got a clue what happened. I was just trying to add a humerous comment on my husbands behalf, but it backfired. Never mind.

I know it's too quick to judge but it's a pretty unpleasant prospect to think that two skippers of vessels the size of these things can't avoid bumping into each other. As someone pointed out upthread, if this had happened a bit further out it doesn't bear thinking about what might have happened

I'll be interested to get the full incident report. AIS data that both ships would be obliged to transmit and other navigational aids available should have shown how close they were. In low visibility, are boats not required to maintain greater separation as happens for planes?

Here's as close as I can get to the moment of impact on the AIS data site:

http://www.aisliverpool.org.uk/historymap....p;date=20070203

Here's a track of SE1:

http://www.aisliverpool.org.uk/shiptrail.p...p;date=20070203

http://www.aisliverpool.org.uk/shiptrail.p...p;date=20070203

And here's a track of the other one:

http://www.aisliverpool.org.uk/shiptrail.p...p;date=20070203

http://www.aisliverpool.org.uk/shiptrail.p...p;date=20070203

Looks like the big one was turning round at the point the they collided.

[uPDATE - have asked the webmaster if he logs AIS data at a finer resolution and if I can get detailed plots for around the time of the collision. It seems that the history available from the website only shows positions every ten minutes.]

A friend of mine asked me to put this on the forum as he is having trouble putting a post up

"does any one here work, have worked at sea? does any one have a HND or degree in nautical science? if not dont make comments u do not know anything about. if you want the full story the marine accident investigation branch's web-site is http://www.maib.dft.gov.uk/home/index.cfm this will be the board that will tell what happened without small minded comments by people who have not got a clue. The steam packet officers and crew are some of the best i have ever sailed with"
