Isle Of Man Electoral Register

The Isle of Man has had popular elections for the House of Keys since 1867 and so there has been plenty of time to get things right.

At the last General Election in 2006 there were a number of complaints regarding the Electoral Roll, but this complaint is not a new one.

Over one hundred years ago a newly elected MHK had cause to complain and in his maiden speech to the House, the newly elected MHK, said:

he had been called upon to pay £3 for a list of South Douglas, and would not have begrudged the money if the list had been correct. He had about six dozen papers sent out in accordance with the list, returned from the Dead Letter Office in Liverpool. A great many of the people had been dead for years, but still their names were kept on the list, many whose names were on the list had left the Island; whilst others who had lived in the town for the last ten years had their names omitted. He thought the matter should really be looked into, and the difficulty obriated.

Nice to see that after over 100 years something is finally being done about it!

I will get back to you with the Hansard reference.

It is also interesting to see that there was much being done about culling shitehawks on the Island around this time. There was a lengthy enquiry and many fishermen throughout the Island were called to give evidence. There was a belief that the gulls amassing out at sea helped the fishermen to locate the herring shoals. After much evidence this notion was discarded and said to be no more than the product of the said hawk.

How times have changed in Douglas eh!! Now it seem the gull is to become our National bird and something to be revered and worshipped, especially by the Corporation.

manxforums thread about that gull thing

We are in danger of making ourselves the laughing stock of every coastal village, town and city throughout the British Isles - to say nothing of the likes of inland Norwich and Nottingham. Half a century ago, any gulls found inland were considered storm driven or had moved inland to die. Since thise tomes however, the gulls have discovered the delights of sewage farms and landfill sights and are becoming a common pest throughout the land.

Well, at least the structure will keep a small majority of Douglas Corporation councillors happy.
