Tempus Fugit
If he gets a medal in the olympics then he's got to be guaranteed the BBC sports personality of the year award surely? He's done enough already to win it but an olympic medal would surely secure it for him. Get your bets on now, he's 20-1 fixed
Lonan3
A quick check through today's national press reveals that the Telegraph, Times and Independent all mention the fact that he is from the Isle of Man. The Guardian manages to avoid it.

Lonan3
A quick check through today's national press reveals that the Telegraph, Times and Independent all mention the fact that he is from the Isle of Man. The Guardian manages to avoid it. but he's actually got a blog on the Guardian ! I'm aware of that. The story actually says: At the age of 23, and in only his second Tour, the Guardian columnist Cavendish takes over the record from Barry Hoban, who won two stages on two occasions, in 1969 and 1973,, but they're still the only 'serious' national to avoid mentioning his origins in today's story. StuartT
I wonder whether mark's momentuous achievement will get our government to do something as regards sorting out cycling week? I'd understood that part of the problem was funding - surely now there can't be any reason to deny that cycling should have more support on the Island, and that there should be a cycling equivelant to the TT. You could sell it as ride and compete with the stars, and maybe if it was pitched at the right time in the season Mark could arrange for some of his team mates (and maybe rivals?) to come over and ride in it. Cycle week used to be massive, and there used to be a lot of top quality talent over for it. Also, surely now they have to get a local artist to do some sort of statue. Maybe we could try and get some public subscriptions for one?
triskelion
He's only at the start of his career; no need for statues, or renaming it 'Mark Cavendish Airport' just yet. Absolutely phenomenal though.
ponderer
A bit harsh having a go at the Guardian when it is the first paper to tip the Isle of Man to win a gold in the team pursuit at the Commonwealth Games in Delhi in 2010! This is what they said after Cav's first stage win... "....A first stage win for Mark Cavendish and the Isle of Man and there should be much more to come, both from Cav and the island. At 23, the Team Columbia sprinter has several years ahead of him to match Barry Hoban's British record of eight stages, while the island will boast a second cycling Olympian this year, the road racer Jonny Bellis, bronze medal in last year's under-23 Worlds and destined for a professional contract with the CSC team this autumn. In the road endurance academy is another prospect, Peter Kennaugh, all of 19 and a gold medallist in the under-23 track world championships. Bubbling under in the Olympic Development Programme are Mark Christian and Chris Whorrall. With so much burgeoning talent from such a tiny talent pool, the Manx team will be a good outside bet for a gold in the team pursuit at the Commonwealth Games in Delhi in 2010. You read it here first."... http://www.guardian.co.uk/sport/2008/jul/1...france.cycling1 Surely there needs to be much more effort to get behind Manx cycling, recognise Cav's achievements and encourage Bellis, Kennaugh, Christian, Whorrall and others...? And that means serious resources and proper recognition. This cycling excellence can really put the island on the map...
