Shared Space

This is brilliant - it's a project called Shared Space (www.shared-space.org), and is currently being carried out in seven european cities. According to the site, 'The project aims to develop new policies and new methods for an integral approach of the planning of public space for which man and his surroundings are taken as the basis.'

What it basically means is, that it gives responsibility back to the people, and requires everyone to think more again - especially when it comes to traffic, their approach is great: Instead of putting up more and more signs, and telling the 'dumb' motorists what to do, they do exactly the opposite: everything is removed! Traffic lights, signs, even road markings - all gone, and the big surprise: It works! Fewer people killed or injured, as everyone has to use their brain again, and actively take part in the process of getting somewhere.

It's the final proof (if any was ever needed) that the nanny state approach doesn't work!

There's a link to an good article in the telegraph on that site, that explains the main points: clickey

Now then, where's my metal grinder - that traffic light up at Bank Hill had it a long time coming - all in the interest of road safety, obviously...

Perfect example is the Broadway traffic lights. Every morning there are tailbacks across the prom and up broadway and the associated roads.

On the odd occassion the traffic lights stop working traffic flows :) in all directions as people see the lights are out and give way to each other and everyone gets to work feeling shiny and happy.

I would love the DOT to do some surveys (or publish they have done them) by turning off different sets of lights at the busier times of day.
