Douglas Corporation On The Lavish Spend...

I heard on MR an interview with Lynda Ramsey describing the refurbished foyer of the Town Hall....not forgetting the special carpet with the Douglas Corporation crest...what was wrong with the marble/tiled foyer - how much has a special one-off carpet cost??

Is this the price is right? Are you really Bruce Forsythe?

...And then there is the new Douglas Corporation works depot, which has just been constructed at Braddan, which according to a radio interview with the Deputy Town Clerk will alleviate the traffic situation at Lake Road!!!!(Nice of them to help out a commercial enterprise isn't it).

Also we are shortly to be told (us Douglas residents) by how much our rates will be going up :whatever:

At the end of the day Douglas Corporation are absolute fantastic value for money aren't they?

since posting earlier a disturbing piece of information/story has come to hand.....

apparently last year, some time around about April/May, Douglas Corpn revealed and it was reported in IOM Newspapers that there was £150,000 worth of unpaid parking tickets due on its patrolled car park sites (i.e Bottleneck, Cambrian Place, Shaws Brow)...

the Corpy have a guy whose employed to slap tickets on and apparently he's quite good at it....BUT what's the point of issuing tickets if you don't collect the fines!!!!

last year the Corpy weren't able to say what the problem with collection was 'cos the Enforcement Officer was (handily enough) on holiday......

Since the £150,000 figure what has happened??? has the figure gone down..or UP...

....I've seen copies of the letters/e-mails that have been sent to the Corpy and Councillors but there has been an astonishing wall of silence....the overpowering smell is of a big cover up.....what is the truth....

(and there is more on a related topic coming soon...)

  • 3 weeks later...

with regard to the Douglas Corpn Lake Road site which they are vacating to relocate to the new Cooil Road depot am I correct in thinking the Corpy is selling/has sold its Lake Road site to Dandara? But what about the new site on Cooil Road - isn't that site only on a lease where the Corpy have to pay ongoing and increasing rental charges to Dandara - a good deal or what??

Actually yes. The corpy now get new, purpose built premises with very low maintenance costs along with a large capital injection with which they can fund other projects around Douglas without having to rely on rates increases or loans. So it doesn't seem that bad a deal at all.

Mind you if they had sold their existing premises (which are in a dangerous condition and woefully inadequate) and spent the cash on purpose built new premises no doubt you would have come on here moaning about them wasting cash on needless luxuries whilst the ratepayers have to go without.

Stop moaning about problems that do not exist

The land in lake road must be worth 10 times as much as apiece of land up by B&Q. Dandara certainly have taken the rate payers for a ride. Why do you think they have never developed the old EB Christians site? They have been waiting to get their grubby hands on the timber yard (which they got) and then the corpy depot to give them the whole site from Bridge road down the whole length of Lake road. Douglas Corporation had the upper hand and could have named their own price. They should have secured ownership of the new site (not becoming a tenant) and still insisted on free construction of the new building.

If Dandara said no then the corpy should have sat & waited. Tesco were interested in the site as well but certain councellors decided against them. They wanted to move the main carpark onto the corpy site to extend the store to sell clothes & white goods etc (before they revamped last year) but you could imagine the panic that that would cause in certain quarters! Giving the locals access to lower prices would not be a good thing !! This information came from two individuals who work for Tesco.

Rumours suggest its a 45 year lease ... thats it

a 45 year lease - wonder how much a year the rent is? and at the end of 45 years what will the renewal terms be?

seems just like the Library deal the did Corpy - and other deals the Govt are doing - frees up capital to help with short term cash requirements but the ongoing cost is more than the capital cost of purchasing the asset outright - leave the debt to the next generation!!! these deals just hide the true cost and help politicians avoid having to face the electorate on unpleasant cost measures.

soon I can see the Corpy doing a cosy deal with Dandara to offload the promenade stables in return for a lease on a purpose built unit ( complying with all the very latest animal welfare / Health & Safety requirements )...

...then there is the Town Hall in Ridegway Street....it must be bursting at the seams as far as numbers of people occupying sq meter floor space so the obvious move is to take alease on a new office block built by Dandara (and built on the old Lake Road site).....

At the end of 45 years the building will be 45 years old. It will be fucking useless. Rather like yourself

Some might point out that the Town Hall is 150 year old and counting and for site value alone is worth a mint ... but that would be churlish.
