Re - Qualifying ?

It seems to have slipped past unnoticed but fees for people ,who might want to get a set of decent qualifications while they continue to work, have just taken a big leap upwards.

At least in the Isle of Man they have !

I always understood it was Manx Government policy to promote life long learning and retraining and, in particular, the Open University has been held up as a model method of obtaining credible qualifications while, at the same time, continuing to work.

There are extremely limited opportunities for people to obtain a degree by any other method, while continuing to support their families and contribute to the economy, and where opportunities do exist, the choice of subject is tiny compared to that offered by the OU.

Furthermore, the OU has been an extremely cost effective method for individuals to study independently or for employers to sponsor their workers.

It turns out this has only been the case because the UK Government has been applying a subsidy to undergraduate level courses so students can gain a degree for about 2 -3 thousand pounds. It now seems someone has realised the Isle of Man is not part of the UK and the OU can no longer offer the subsidised fee to Manx residents.

It beggars belief that the Manx Government has not indicated equivalent subsidies will be made available with immediate effect. The result is that Manx people wanting to improve their qualifications or take advantage of the OU range of undergraduate level education opportunities for the purpose of CPD will now have to pay approximately 12 - 13 thousand pounds for their degree. UK counterparts will contnue to pay approx 2 - 3 thousand.

Maybe times are hard at the moment but surely we are still able to invest modest sums of money in training and retraining our workforce.

Over to Mr Anderson I guess.
