Will Pubs Survive?

12 months ago you could not smoke in a bar in Florida, now you can unless they serve food.

Pubs will shut, jobs will be lost taxes will go up to cover the loss by Government

Also pubs can install a unit that could and would change the air inside the pub quicker than smoke could rise creating a clean smoke free bar. Exhaust fumes from car are justs as harmfull should we ban cars.

I think more non smokers would actually go to pubs, Everybody i know hates going home smelling of fags, Smokers chose to smoke, Non smokers chose not to smoke, So why should non smokers have to breath in this smoke if they chose not to!

No!, please take the time to explain it to me, I obviously could benefit from your enhanced wisdom!

I'll look forward to you moving to ban cars from our roads then as well?

Theres far more deadly carcegens come from them than cigarette smoke.

Its about freedom of choice, if you choose to go to a pub then you know people are going to smoke there, same as if you choose to work in there.

And just because I dont agree with you doesnt mean I should just get over it and move on. Im not on about all enclosed and work spaces. And if youre that bothered about second hand smoke, dont you think by telling people not to go down the pub to smoke they'll be smokig at home over their children more? It's because of closed minded attitudes like yours that allow politicians to move further towards a nanny state.

Even if you ardently believe that there isn't the remotest link to cancer, you must accept that their is some form of risk to health, not to add that it is extremely unpleasant to some people. (ask any severe asthmatic) This is evidence enough.

My wife (a non-smoker) is also an asthmatic. She believes the idea of banning smoking in pubs etc is utter nonsense that will have a detrimental effect on many businesses. She does not support the ban. Evidence enough?

The brewery gave the non smokers a chance of a non smoking bar but what did the non smokers do, they went to bars that allowed smoking, I rest my case

Oh yeah,ONE pub. That was something that was never going to work as people will always congregate in busier places.

Can anyone answer me this? How many of us stated in the past that we wouldn't go to the pub once the price of a pint reached 50p? £1? £2? We're all still there albeit in smaller numbers but that's due to the fact of the rising prices and the availability of cheaper drinks from the supermarkets. I myself am not into drinking at home and prefer to "socialise". All the smokers who are crying about this saying they only smoke when they have a drink? Why not stay at home and do both? There'll be more money available for booze and fags if you're not paying brewery prices, and I can go home not reaking of stale smoke.

Times change people. Accept it and move on.

I know peopl who keep saying they only smoke when there in a pub. Selfish buggars because I wish they'd just say "Oh I only smoke when I'm at home and that". That way they will only give their wife and kids smelly clothes and burn holes on the settee and there carpets.

There are two pro-smokers here that are quickly losing it off hte street-credibility-o-meter. theislandinsider and Theskeat. In my opinion amnyway

theyre banning smoking because they say second hand smoke causes cancer

that has never been proven

You'd be fairly accurate to assume that it causes cancer, regardless of who's smoke it is. If the chemicals in smoke cause cancer, then the same chemicals in second-hand smoke will too.

I say ban it. People will obviously complain, society will adjust.

im not pro-smoking Doric, im pro civil liberties and freedom of choice

You seem to be forgetting that smoking is still legal

I'd be having a similar argument, regardless of issue, if the Government of this Island were trying to ban something based on opinon and not fact.

If expecting the Government and the people of this Island to consider the facts of a situation loses me credability in your opinion then so be it, but the day we start stating opinion as fact and forgetting what the facts are before making decisions is the day we move on to a very dangerous level of legislative procedures

As far as I can see the ONLY legitimate argument in favour of a ban is the employee protection angle. With the exception of the employees, non-smokers (I am one) are entirely at liberty to withdraw their custom from bars where smoking is allowed. What the non-smokers here seem to want though is the right to demand that every bar conform to their wishes.

Yeah great one non-smoking bar...some choice and some rested case...how about we give a try and see what happens. Stop trying to sensationalise everything you cock.

Maybe, just maybe, it will end up as a storm in a teacup much like the "oh no the mountain raod will be shut for 2 months therefore my journey to work will take 3 hours" bleat that went on...

Tugger - I see your point, but if you spin the argument round.

smokers are entirely at liberty to withdraw their custom from bars where smoking is not allowed

There's no clear cut solution, and either way the government will appear unpopular.
