There was a thread before this one!

Like I said - What DIGITAL service is available to MOST of us on the Island?

TV - NO

RADIO - NO

If its just a case of them supplying news feeds for Manx Radio - Whoopee! Lets all sing the praises of the BBC, they have had a BBC reporter feeding them with news (from our TV Tax) from the island for quite a while now .... hardly a stess packed - top notch journo job for them is it. Infact all Manx Radio has to do is log onto manx.net and click the BBC IOM News button that is using up valuable ad space.

"And now the news from our correspondant on the Isle of Man - Top story tonight, <DONG>Dog cr*p found on a Douglas street - <DONG> sheep bleats on the hills - <DONG> Mountain Road is closed for urgent safety work <DONG> The BBC is run by a massive <DONG> .. etc etc etc

One can only assume that your posting means your getting a chunk of cash from the BBC - and trying to fill us all with warm hearted glee that the BBC is really going to do somthing with our money for a change.

Can't find out anything from the BBC press office

Its worth having a look at OFCOM site (www.ofcom.org.uk) and what it has to say about the IoM

http://search.ofcom.org.uk/search/?sp-a=sp...&sp-p=all&Go=Go

IoM Gov wanting to keep their satellite business under wraps... and why did OFCOM pay the IoM government £67,000 last year?

http://www.ofcom.org.uk/about/accoun/repor...sp-o=2,100000,0

Must be a story in their somewhere!

Remember this:

The BBC employes between 35 - 45 people in the Channel Islands, TV, Radio & on-line.

This is just a sup to try and make them look better for Manx coverage on the licence fee.

I understand Beth Espey is top of the list of journo's to move to a BBC contract - Working in the same room but on a much better package/pension/hours ( + she will look great in the TV )

It seems that Manx Radio still has one of the largest newsrooms in the British Isles per head of the population

BBC Press Office statement

The BBC announced today that it is to base two new broadcast journalists on the Isle of Man to improve its coverage of the island.

Head of Local & Regional Programming for the North West Leo Devine joined the BBC bus in Douglas to make the announcement.

He said: "We are delighted to be able to announce these new roles today.

"This is the latest step in a series of moves to improve our service to the island and provides a fantastic opportunity for us to enhance our coverage and strengthen relationships with communities here."

The new reporters will be multiskilled journalists able to serve the BBC's online, radio and television services.

They will help to develop the new Where I Live website for the island and provide stories for other BBC outlets.

The BBC launched a Where I Live site for the Isle of Man in the autumn - bbc.co.uk/isleofman.

It has also created a new 'news index' dedicated to Isle of Man stories on the bbc.co.uk/news and a dedicated Ceefax page (on the NW and NE 169s).

The BBC's long term aim is to provide a Local TV service for the island as part of the Corporation's commitment to providing regular bulletins for around 60 services.

This is dependent on the success of a pilot scheme currently underway in the West Midlands and approval from the BBC Governors.

Chief Minister Donald Gelling MLC said: "We welcome this significant step forward in the BBC's commitment to the Isle of Man and look forward to watching how these new services develop."

Notes to Editors

The BBC bus is making a four-day visit to the island.

It will be in the B&Q car park, Braddan, Douglas, between 10.00am and 4.00pm today and tomorrow (Friday 24 and Saturday 25 March) to promote BBC RAW.

BBC RAW is a literacy campaign aimed at igniting people's passion for reading and writing.

What was the point in cutting and pasting the press release onto your last post? Beckett's link goes straight to it.

Anyway I agree we get a raw end of the deal out of the BBC, but this is a step in the right direction.

The situation here and in the Channel Islands is different though because of historical reasons. When the Beeb came up to set up its local radio network, we already had Manx Radio. So they there wasn't the need to establish one here. The real impact of this decision wasn't felt until more recently when new outlets came on-line and the BBC didn't have the infrastructure on the Island to capitalise.

The real fault probably lies with the weak politicians in the 60's who took the short-sighted decision to set up Manx Radio. And the real impact lies not in news delivery, which is good, but in the lack of production values on the rest of their output because that is far below the standard of BBC local radio.

Many people who read this forum seem to be too lard-arsed to click on a link (I'm one of them I'm afraid) but when a quote is provided will often read it.

I would say the real fault lies in the politicians who have been more than happy to say on our behalfs for us all to pay, and keep paying, the BBC licence fee. And that goes back to the 1950's.

For all its faults, there can be little doubt that the BBC is worth paying for but I think on the Isle of Man it would be better centrally funded directly from Government to the BBC - a far more efficient way of doing things with less whingeing all round. This would also give our Government a significant £Xmillion playing card in negotiations as to how that money was spent.

Think about it.

Get a grip people. Every week the Examiner is wafer thin and the Indy is padded out with junk like Pet idol or property porn supplements, and MR incessantly reports on closed roads and village fetes.

If you really check there are about 3 pages worth of real news a week - so why does everyone think that we are being diddled because the BBC aren't giving us local services?

Even if it did the coverage would be a constant round of mediocre local politics from the same mediocre local politicians we have to put up with on MR. So what exactly are you people expecting - "Newsnight with Jeremy Paxman live from Malew Parish Hall"? A live Podcast containing Richard Corkills re-election manifesto?

The BBC don't offer a full range of services because, surprise, there is little enough news to report on.

I think a lot of news coverage is indeed piss poor.

Some investigative journalism would soon turn things around. With the way the Government is run and recent scadals, you're right, why is the paper full of crap?

However surely in the first instance this would point to a crap paper, not a lack of news or public interest stories that are out there for the taking!
