Before everyone gets to excited about the BBC press release ...

BBC journalists threatened with further redundancies

Published: Thursday, January 26, 2006

By Caitlin Pike

Journalists at the BBC face a new round of widespread job cuts in the second year of director general Mark Thompson's plan to save £355m by 2008.

In a scheduled meeting between joint unions and BBC management on Tuesday — designed to further negotiate compulsory redundancies arising from the first year of Thompson's cuts — head of radio news Stephen Mitchell announced the BBC's wish list of journalists' posts to be cut across both radio and television news in year two of Thompson's strategy.

The proposals include three reporters being lost from the Today programme and one reporter to be axed from World at One and PM. Radio Five Live is to lose seven specialist reporters, including those covering consumer affairs, home affairs, entertainment, health and science.

BBC Radio planning will be reorganized, with Five Live and the Asian Network losing their own specific planning team. The BBC admitted that this would result in less distinctive news on the four radio stations — Five Live, Asian Network, Radio 2 and Radio 4.

Aside from radio, 29 posts in news gathering, 12 jobs in new media and interactive, and five jobs in TV news planning are also proposed to be cut.

BBC head of news Peter Horrocks sent an email to staff on Tuesday saying that compulsory redundancies with the new round of proposed job cuts could not be ruled out. Up to 200 staff are still facing compulsory redundancy from the first year of job cuts.

NUJ representatives at Tuesday's meeting said they would not discuss the proposed job cuts for year two until they had completed negotiations with management over the first round of cuts.

I wonder if the BBC will have any influence on MR. If so it could be goodbye to golden moments such as those this morning. Great to hear that burglary in the Isle of Man according to the reporter is still 'burgalry'. Priceless

And anyone who drowns out Ian Cottier's voice with 'The Last Post' gets my vote!

Btw anyone hear Madonna on the C'wealth Games report last week? Had me and my bloke in stitches! (once we worked out what was going on)

I understand the whole object is to get Manx Radio in to a "special" relationship with the BBC

The Manx Government has called for a check on how the station still needs over £40,000 a week from the Manx Taxpayer!

It could possibily show that the best way forward is to get rid of almost half the staff who are employed to bring in the advertising money. Thus setting up the BBC to provide the news..etc!

So.. the possible future could be...:

Half the staff needed - more input to BBC and local BBC TV

Manx Radio News is just a PR department - just look at these scripts today...

VLM Airlines has announced it made a pre-tax profit of €2.0m last year.

Revenues for the full year were up 17% from seventy five million euros to almost eighty six million euros.

The figures are higher than the company's original forecasts, and it says this is due to the introduction of new services such as its Isle of Man to London City route.

Passenger numbers were also up, rising 12% to more than 625,000 over the last twelve months.

It’s been quite a year for VLM Airlines, which was named Regional Airline of The Year by the renowned industry magazine, Air Transport World.

No one has done any work on this story - poor work - just writing up the press release

Another one today

Plans to improve safety at both this year's and next year’s centenary TT have been announced.

Tourism Minister David Cretney revealed the news during last night’s TT 2006 press launch at the Villa Marina.

With less than two months until the festival gets underway, Mr Cretney says excitement is building.

The news editor should hang his head in shame - these are nothing more than a reworking of a press release

1)has anyone else noticed how MR can't even advertise its own job vacancies....I've just checked teh website and there is no mention of the "Journalist" job advertised in this week's Courier (page 46)...

The Courier says on the front page it has an average weekly VFD of 35,871.

If you were a potential advertiser who would you place your ad with? The Courier where it will be seen... or with MR where their own web-site doesn't even advertise their own job vacancies!!!

2) I also read through this piece about the MR Trust:-

The structure remained largely unchanged until the early 1990s, when the station became the subject of a major privatisation debate. After lengthy deliberations spanning almost 18 months, including the appointment of another independent Inquiry into the station's future, Tynwald accepted a recommendation that Manx Radio remains in public ownership and continues to be operated by Radio Manx Limited but that its protection from the risk of political interference be strengthened by the creation of the Manx Radio Trust. The Trust came into being in 1994.

The Manx Radio Trust comprises nine trustees, made up of members of the public from a range of backgrounds. Their job is to represent public opinion and to ensure that, so far as is practicable, Manx Radio remains responsive to the needs of the people of the Isle of Man. Trustees meet regularly and have quarterly meetings with Directors of the Company.

The present trustees are:

Malcolm Hartley, Caroline Convery, Paul Costain, David Evans, Nicola Kermode, Molly Quirk, Stan Watterson

Helen Wilson, Ann Kaighin

The Trustees hold the shares in Radio Manx Limited in trust on behalf of the Isle of Man Government. The beneficial owner is formally the Treasury. Trustees exercise the normal ownership responsibilities of shareholders, subject to the terms of the deed by which the Trust is established, including the appointment of directors and approving the Company's accounts.

Questions arising are: a) are the triustees mentioned above the "new" trustees or the "old" trustees? when were they appointed??? and B) (excuse my ignorance on this if I am wrong) but when you place something into trust don't you give the rights of beneficial ownership to the trustees?? so, therefore if you say the beneficial owner is formally the Treasury doesn't that mean the trust is a sham??? Is there a Legal Eagle/STEP professional/other qualified person out there who can comment??

In any trust situation, the trustees hold the LEGAL ownership of the asset on behalf of and for the benefit of beneficiaries. In this case the Treasury is the beneficial owner. If you put an asset into trust you are the settlor and have alienated yourself from that asset (i.e. parted with the ownership of the asset), you have given the asset to trustees who will hold it for the beneficiaries specified in the trust deed. However, the settlor can be a beneficiary.

The whole body of law arises from the Crusades when the landed gentry went off to fight for very long periods of time. They would leave their property in the hands of a trustee to hold the property for the benefit of the crusader's wife (women couldn't effectively hold property then) and children. The crusader would, of course, want to be a beneficiary so that should he return he could take back possession of his erstwhile assets. Hope this clarifies.

Does seem strange when they can advertise for free on their own medium

They also placed an advert to wish someone goodluck - a racing driver I think.

BTW Stuart or Chris which jorno is leaving you?

PS Think the new Mandate is settling in well. Just don't push the "sexual" chem thing with the lovely Beth. It's giving me nightmares!!

Does she really look like this? Ive always fancied the sleek sexy betty boop/betty blue type look.

Is she going to be about for TT as a biker babe for Radio TT?

I wonder what she does for a skid lid if thats her real head shape ....

and thinking aloud ... Lucky saddle.
