manxchatterbox
Ireland ranks 12 in EU States for pay Monday, April 03 15:06:09 Ireland ranks twelfth in the league of EU member States in terms of workers gross pay, an EU-wide study by Federation of European Employers (FedEE). Despite protestation from business lobby groups over the past few years, this survey shows Ireland lagging behind the Isle of Man and The Netherlands with Denmark and Norway as the EU's biggest wage payers. Speaking at the launch of FedEE's Pay in Europe 2006 report today, the Secretary-General of the Federation of European Employers, Robin Chater, said that although there are large differences in the gross pay received by workers across Europe, the picture changes dramatically once tax, social security, holiday bonus supplements and differences in spending power are taken into account. "These factors all tend to narrow the gap between countries," he said. "For example, although median gross hourly earnings in Spain is only 30pc of that in Denmark, the real net spending power experienced by the typical Spanish worker is actually 70pc of that enjoyed by an equivalent Danish worker." Declan
If you look at the Govt's figures in depth, most people earn less than the "average" on the Island. The headline figure they use is the mean but this is skewed by the high earners.
Albert Tatlock
That report relates to the European Union - I was not aware that the Isle of Man had joined!

Albert Tatlock
He wasn't talking about the EU, he means the IoM figures...I presume Mr Chater's press release from the FedEE about pay rates in the European Union infers that the Isle of Man is part of the EU. I read it earlier this morning. http://www.fedee.com/press.shtml#03April2006
Tugger
Strictly speaking I think it may IMPLY that the IOM is part of the EU, and you INFER it. It's sloppily written, but I think each of the sentences works on a standalone basis. Norway, of course, isn't in the EU either. Or Liechtenstein. Or Guernsey. Or Switzerland.
