manxchatterbox
why has no one yet mentioned the debacle over the availability of the voters lists....how can any prospective MHK undertake any canvassing without access to an accurate and complete voters list? The fact that teh existing MHk's have allowed themselves access but restricted it to others makes a mockery of democracy and is surely a step on the road to a totalitarian state.... A little bit over the top mcb but nevertheless it seems absolutely unreasonable that all actual candidates (not prospective candidates) do not have equal access to the voters lists. After all, anyone could claim to be a prospective candidate.
Charles Flynn
All are prospective until the date set for official declaration.
manxchatterbox
..but you can only be a prospective candidate up to nomination day which is 28 (?) days before the election after which prospective candidates become actual candidates...and that period between nomination day and the election is too short a period and doesn't allow for equality with candidates seeking re-election. Therefore those seeking re-election have an advantage in that with having access to the full voters lists they know for a much longer period of time who the electorate is and who they can talk to...IMO if something isn't done and very very quickly the MHK's are going to themselves collectively before the European Court of Human Rights. LoneWolf
All are prospective until the date set for official declaration. They are indeed. But there are other reasons a sitting MHK might have reason to access the voters list. For example there maybe some pressing need for a MHK to contact his / her constituents in the event of some major proposal affecting the area. For example the Port St Mary Marina (sorry couldnt resist it) There are very good reasons the full electoral role shouldnt be available to Tom Dick and Harry. Im sure you can imagine at least some of them. How much junk mail did you get today ?
Albert Tatlock
I did a database for one of them a few years ago - and the electoral register was available on a floppy disk for a nominal fee and a signature (though the list was in a really old database format). What has actually changed since then MCB? You really need to be a little more specific.
Charles Flynn
That'll take some time, MCB LoneWolf, I'm referring to going to Court of Human Rights not the voters register. As far as PSM Marina is concerned local MHK's may be getting a few calls to see what they were doing about it!
LoneWolf
That'll take some time, MCB no time at all. Electoral Role it has always been the case, as far as I am aware that individuals could opt out of the Edited version of the Electoral Role. Rightly so. The Edited version is available to the public. The full version isnt.

LoneWolf
Answer - None (probably 'cos my name isn't Tom, Dick, or Harry) The general problem with internet forums, mcb, is if you cant understand the nuances then you cant enjoy the humour.

Declan
I don't want "prospective" candidates to have my name and address. They have no honourable reason for having it.
