So in other words, too many people on the planet, but that's the elephant in the room that never gets mentioned.

Yes, the only answer is to start sharing wealth more evenly, giving poorer nations and their people more incentive to accept the changes which are required, such as smaller families and birth control.

I just don't understand the logic of the full on wall-to-wall Brindley broadcasting initiative

Why do they want to compete for a younger market & throw the rest of the citizenry to the wolves - isn't it the purpose of community broadcasting to be inclusive as far as possible?

Talk radio is more what a national broadcaster should aim for - with plenty of news, comment, current affairs discussion

Tynwald should bring this experiment to an end

The problem with that is that, generally, population growth accelerates due to longer life expectancy brought by better health care and availability of drugs brought by shared wealth. As survival rates increase, and mortality decreases, there is a lag before birth rates fall and family size decreases. It’s inevitable.

It gets mentioned a lot, usually by people trying to shift blame to anyone but themselves.  But generally population is less a problem than people think - indeed some people already claim we have reached 'peak child'.  That doesn't mean that population won't continue to grow because of the 'bulge' coming through and people living longer.  But fertility is falling rapidly in most countries or is already at or below replacement level.

 That's not to say a lot more couldn't be done, especially in Sub Saharan Africa where a lot of the problem is due to poor health services with those available often being religiously-based.  Aid policies often don't push reproductive services enough (again because of religious influences, especially in the US).  But unless you're intending to start killing people off it's not the top priority because it's starting to solve itself (and will do so quicker with the right help).  And if you are intending to kill people off you really ought to start with the biggest consumers of resources, emitters of pollution and so on, which are the wealthy, particularly in the  West.

I'm not sure that it is.  There's been a correlation in the past, but some very poor countries such as Bangladesh have managed massive drops in fertility.  People (especially women) are only too well aware that more children brings more poverty and will control their family size if they have the chance rather than hope prosperity will arrive and then have fewer children afterwards.

Refugees, rose-tinted spectacles, immigrants and climate change protestors seem to be the subjects of the day.

I have little doubt whatsoever that Andy Wint will be selective in which emails/txts he reads out, and they will be amended by him on the fly at that, but I think Andy Wint and indeed Alex Brindley and the rest of them are going to learn a lot about the er, 'real' Isle of Man.

It's good stuff.

Listened to Manx Radio Breakfast for the first time @ 08:00 for more than the obligatory five minute news this morning.

Young Alex Wotton cuts the mustard for me, a good line of questioning . However, as 'nice' as Ben Hartley is, I do wonder what his role is other than linking traffic, weather and reading out Facebook comments into program. Does he do any serious journo presenting?
