But was there a job to begin with is the first question?

Well he's Local Democracy Report paid for by the BBC and embedded at Manx Radio. There's hundreds all over the UK, so I doubt that the role was created specifically for him.

It's a newly created role as part of a BBC initiative to fund local reporters all across the licence-fee zone.  https://www.bbc.co.uk/lnp//ldrsfaq

Or do you think that the BBC are funding 150 roles across the UK so that the part-time clerk of Rushen Commissioners' son can have a job?

Did others apply and considered? Just askin'.

That's fair enough, but did we actually need the role when there is lots of Manx Radio staff already?

The lad does an ok  job (although he needs to drop the bit of a whine in his voice, which he must have picked up as a kid at the breakfast table).

But what is it with the rest of them at the BBC? Has the BBC created all those roles too?

They probably have. They submarine a freebie post in then do a job creation as he will need a producer, and a technician, and a back-up reporter. etc. And as W2 says above, there are already staff up there.

You have to admit though that a “Local Democracy Reporter” title is simply ludicrous. Is that an admission that local democracy is so rare that rare incidents need to be reported whenever found? It’s the stupidest title of any non-job I’ve seen in a while.

Not really, it is a bit W1A.  But it’s the title used for all these roles accross the UK and it does describe their role. They are put in place to cover local councils and in Ewan’s case Tynwald. If they don’t have a specific designation and become simply a “reporter” there’s a danger that they are treated like a general reporter by the host broadcaster / paper.

Many of the councils will have much bigger budgets than IoMG, one or two may even have more police,  gross total, but none so many per head of population.
