Actually they can't because Manx Radio's RAJAR figures are based on total returns over a year (as is the case for all stations with a smaller potential listenership) so even if everyone stopped listening, the figures would only drop to 75%. This means that the best figures to look at are the year on year ones because otherwise some of the same data is in both sets of returns. It also gets rid of seasonal variation, such as that produced by TT. Comparing the year ending Sept 19 to that for the year ending Sept 18 gives the following statistics for 3FM and Manx Radio: Quote Reach Percentage: 3FM 37% to 39% (+2) Manx Radio 46% to 45% (-1) Average Hours per Head[1]: 3FM 3.8 to 3.4 (-10.5%) Manx Radio 4.3 to 3.8 (-11.6%) Average Houses per Listener: 3FM 10.2 to 8.7 (-14.7%) Manx Radio 9.4 to 8.5 (-9.6%) Total hours: 3FM 264,000 to 238,000 (-9.85%) Manx Radio 298,000 to 266,000 (-10.7%) Listening share in TSA: 3FM 18.9% to 16.4% (-2.5) Manx Radio 21.3% to 18.3% (-3) It's actually pretty bad for both stations. 3FM may have had a few more people listening to it at some time in their survey period, but on every other statistics both stations are down by about 10% year on year. [1] This is based on those aged 15 or over in the area the radio station serves (TSA). RAJAR Uses 70,000 (69,000 in 2018) for the Island. However, only one of them is costing the tax payer a million a year. In this day and age specialist interest is being dealt with by podcast so perhaps that is the way forward for some of manx radio's content It's also a good market test for the demand of the subject matter. You start off making the podcasts for free and then if it becomes popular you can seek to charge or obtain advertising revenue. There's very little point in MR being heavily subsidised from the public purse if it isn't going to take a Manx cultural perspective & provide a Manx 'voice' Better the money were handed over to Culture Vannin who are making an effective job of it? The AM listeners detested Mandate and any overflow into their programme. There is a fair amount of people who literally could not tell you who their MHK is* and care for politics and current affairs, other than their own, not one jot. Similarly the Mandate listeners do not want pop pop pop music in the morning. So the feckless Brindley (a very none-serious type of boy-bloke) and co. decided to mix them up. Well it works for Jeremy Vine doesn't it? I would suspect that you are correct. That frequency split endured for decades for a reason. If they had to do anything, I think it would have been better from the station's point of view to have kept Mandate and put it on both FM and AM. That way you would still lose ex Chris Williams listeners, but at least you have an "out" by claiming to be concentrating fully on the public service remit. There is no way on this earth is anyone going to stick AM on in the morning just to listen to Chris Williams ‘pop’ music when there already exists millions of other better stations. That can be the only reason. You don't go there because it's unique. You have to put up with the godawful adverts. Who knows why regulars listen.
