Manx Radio

I just don’t get why stations like Manx Radio and Radio 4 chase the younger listener. They do not, never have and never will listen to this sort of station. I never did, but I do now as I am getting older. Listeners to public information stations will always be senior members of the community. It doesn’t even make sense if they were chasing advertising money as the grey market is generally more affluent than the millennial market. I would love to see their rational.

All you need to do is spread you’re ass cheeks apart and succumb to the hierarchy at Manx Radio. It’s a bit like this forum. If you’re a big fat poof you can do what you like.

Charmer aren't you. I have reported the post by the way - just in case there are any conspiracy theories.

It been interesting to listen to the output of Manx Radio over the last month.

There has been a little change of direction on the breakfast show to cutdown on the silliness, even it's just for a 20 minute segment, and return to a sort of Mandate. Beth is the right fit for that style of show, not the light weight stuff that she still has to do for the rest of the programme and there is still the problem of the co-host. As always you get the impression they are all having a great time, but that seems to fail to come over to many old guard listeners. Radio stations have programmes that need presenters, so surely, as when it started with Ms Wotton, the replacement should also do the full 5 days.

And I guess that is where the problems still is.

It now takes two presenters to produce an off peak programme starting at 5a.m. which barely has anyone tuning in! Why has this happened? It could have a lot to do with the Managing director who has been keen to present programmes rather than just manage them. I think that's a good thing following Pugh who never took to the microphone at all.

So whats happened? 'Shouty' Chris, who has always made it known he was not happy back on the graveyard/nights shift, now gets to co-host with 'smachie' Chris, they are having such a wacky time!! That left a gap for MD Chris to play train-sets for himself. But now the programme is not just a greatest hits music format, much more has happened, with MD Chris bringing in his own new features, a signal that this is not a temporary change at the helm. Secondly he's doing feature interviews with guests and politicians etc, which fits the public sector remit very well, although maybe this should be the main daytime shows. At the same time MD Chris is showing up the 10+ news team for getting his material on the bulletins the next day.

But what must be the main cause of concern on Douglas Head will be the availability of government funding after all the Covid stuff is behind us. Many will feel the station will need to cut its cloth accordingly in the new world order. Alf will not have millions of pounds to throw at the station anymore. Advertising will not doubt also be hit for sometime to come. Will there really be a budget to keep paying two presenters for the pre-dawn chorus?

A fair enough synopsis WKRP, but you make all that sound like your last sentence is the conclusion.

I would say from 5am right through to 9pm there needs to be a huge shake up. Well, there's got to be hasn't there. Which I suppose is what your post says,

Yes, there'll have to be a comprehensive report commissioned after this, preferably by an off-Island firm of media consultants, with a wide remit to look at all aspects of the station. The report will then go to a Tynwald committee for scrutiny. The whole process should be completed within twelve months. At the end of the twelve months Smashie and Nicey will go back to presenting their own shows.

Try this little beaut:

5.3 The breakfast show on FM (Mandate) adopts a one-hour speech segment that ends at 8.30am. This should be extended until 9am, especially as the audience falls away the moment the speech content ends.

SOURCE - Myers review into Manx Radio

Of course the boy Brindley (I have nothing against him personally, just professionally) the current Programme Controller, would care little for the Myers Report because it was all serious and had no slapstick and saucy innuendo in it.

or another example:

5.9 In the week I was present, there were at least two instances where a public service radio station seemed to have missed the mark. Both related to the island games where a record number of athletes returned with gold medals. Not a single person from Tynwald attended the airport to greet their return, which many residents may have thought surprising and offensive. Someone from the Government should have been taken to task about this on the following mornings breakfast show. Nothing was mentioned, which is difficult to understand for a station that proudly boasts that it takes ministers to task on a regular basis!

As I mentioned up above, Ministers these days only have to tax their minds on the various quizzes and larks they have on Manx Radio these days.

John Myers died in June 2019. This clearly gave Manx Radio, sorry I mean 'New Manx Radio' the green light to launch in October 2019 and continue taking the money and have a bit of a lark for the next 3 years or more. And stick two fingers up to the now deceased John Myers and his Report.

I was brought up listening to the BBC World Service and, later, Radio 4. I loved it when I was younger but can't be bothered with it anymore.

I've never liked cheesy deejay pop music radio either - the world of jingles, playlists, stupid competitions, adverts, phone-ins,  requests etc.

Thank goodness that the world's best content makers no longer need old fashioned broadcasters.

I do rather enjoy the TLS podcast presented by Stig Abel who seems to be the exec in charge of the proposed Radio station.
