Manx Radio

Incorrect as usual.

I think the point being, the hourly rate for some of the DJs/presenters at Manx Radio is eye-watering but aye, commensurate with a business being given £million a year by the taxpayer.

It's mainly only my rate that's eye-watering, but would YOU get out of bed for less than a grand a day?

Don't know about the latest WuFlu briefings, but I suspect Government tells media in the morning what time the announcement will be in the afternoon, then fails to turn up on time. Meanwhile, presses have been held and airtime allocated for the latest pronouncement about the Emperor's new pantaloons. It reminds the media plebs that the MHK's are considerably more important than them. If I was in charge at Manx Radio I'd start playing the 'Ulla' fighting machine noises from War of the Worlds at the precise time nominated and then empty chair them with narrator updates "Mr XX is now four minutes late to his own press conference. We can only assume that events of GREAT import have necessitated this tardy treatment of our listeners, so like you we can only await this vital announcement with bated breath".

Your perturbance due to lateness of the Government Covid briefings is misguided.

Maybe Manx Radio should just say "stuff you Howard, we're going to play some records and have a laugh if you aren't going to be on time. How dare you interrupt our jolly schedules anyway".

But technology has come of age since Covid. The Government had their own video feed on Facebook broadcasting the briefings. Who needs Manx Radio? Plus there was BBC, ITV, 3FM, Isle of Man Newspapers, MTTV, and others to ask questions and report.

Seriously......who really needs Manx Radio. Or rather, who needs to give Manx Radio £1million a year to employ a legion of folk to spin discs and that?

The Covid situation has provided 'New' Manx Radio with a better RAJAR return than it deserved.

Let's see what happens after Covid.

"Who really needs Manx Radio"? Technically, nobody except me - my Merc won't run on water so I need you (personally, ideally) to buy my petrol. Who WANTS Manx Radio is a more reasonable question, and I expect that more people got their official updates from my colleagues than all the other media you mention put together.

I have had the unfortunate experience of viewing theManx Radio ‘Disco-lactation’ thing over the afternoon.

WTAF!?

its like virtual lap dancing - I’m waiting for some heavy set Latvian to come round to escort me to a cash point soon.

Sounds like a great way to flounce out of there never to return.

You are possibly correct but I think you may be pushing it to suggest that more people get their official updates from Manx Radio than all the media gettafa mentioned.

I used to be far more supportive of the Manx Radio subvention than I am now. Slowly Manx Radio appears to be dumbing down with speech based content cut back. It is getting to be more like the other IoM radio stations in content just with a more varied range of music in the evenings. I get the feeling that those in charge would be happy to make it a mainly music station "with news on the hour, every hour" and that to access this we have to access facebook or a podcast.

Now my listening may not be at all representative but I tended to listen to part of the Sport Previews/results and results programmes and mandate in the morning. I would also check out the Sunday lunchtime slot and generally listen to depending on the topic and sometimes the slot after the news in the evenings.

Of that lot they have cut the Saturday preview and the result slot is am only. The 12:00pm Sunday slot continued but the follow up Mannin Line was axed and I am not sure if the 12:00pn has also been axed or just suspended at resent. I might catch a small bit of mandate in the morning but I tend not to as if I wanted to listen to music and inane wittering in the morning I would let the kids connect their smart phones and the wife talk to me. I now tend to listen to Radio 5 on the way into work and because that is what it is tuned into I no longer listen to any of the talk slots after the evening news as I don't come across when I start the car to drive home.

Now I understand that music is cheaper than talk based programming so I would understand if the cuts appeared to have been made to save staffing costs but we now have 2 presenters on the show that finishes at 7:30am and 2 on the old mandate slot when previously they coped fine with 1.

Worse than all this are the presenters pictures on the Manx Radio website. Who thought gurning pictures of the presenters in white tops against a white background was a great look. It is like the image Radio 1 wanted in the days of Pat Sharp.

Fair points LL. I suppose RAJAR will eventually show whether the new schedule works or not. I'm sure nothing is cast in tablets of stone and it might take further tweaking.

I will come back to the other question, but just as I read your post today's IoMG Coronavirus briefing started. I think the number watching the briefings online is indicative of something. I will leave it to you to peruse the figures:

This was a snapshot between 5:25 and 5:30pm:

284 - Watch - Isle of Man Government live

1.1k - Manx Radio

824 - 3fm

643 - Energy

355 - Gef the Mongoose

337 - Isle of Man Newspapers

There's  BBC and ITV figures too of course.

All the others put together, that I have shown, are at least twice as much as Manx Radio.

(PS Just read LL's post. Manx Radio seem to be losing the edge)

Covid saved Manx Radio from a huge embarrassment. People were dumping the TV just to listen for any news on Manx Radi0. and of course the briefing were a must for anyone without a connection to hand.

And then MR dumped the questions (well as good as - AM, wtf?) and got snotty when the briefings weren't on time.

Manx Radio has a lot of work to do because for a number of reasons (Covid being one) I really can't see those £millions over year 2 and 3 (they got year one ££££££s) being available to fill your tank Stu.

That would suggest Manx Radio are winning the battle of the streamers, at that time, on that day.

When I could be bothered with the briefings i just clicked the first one that came up in my news feed, no brand loyalty from me.
