People tuning in to whatever happens to be playing at them - like in the 1920s. Broadcasting will be phased out. The sooner the better. There are much better ways of delivering content. Not anytime soon it won’t. Wen we all first got music in our phones I and lots of others stopped listening to radio and just stream tunes in the car. Now I am back to radio as the novelty wore off. Music, with a bit of local chat and news on the way to work is far preferable to just listening to music for me and lots of others. My kids all listen to radio rather than Spotify now. Energy FM for some unknown reason but they seem to like it Radio needs to adapt and embrace social media etc but they seem to be doing that and managing quite well.

The amount of money they get is obscene. If they tried to run it as an actual business they would be bust in six months. Dont they get extra for the TT coverage over the stupid subsidy they already get? Did they get paid to cover the TT when there was no TT? Some of their material is voice tracked so they are unable to provide live information as it happens.

Stu Peters
Pongo has repeated his oft-aired treatise on the end of radio, so I feel no shame in sharing mine. Especially since I have no skin in the game these days. Manx Radio does a bit of everything, unlike the others who do 'more music' (which is far cheaper). Its probably closest to a BBC LR station and it does that job just as well for FAR less money. The people that hate it so vehemently have no regard for those who love it. If it sounds like there are lots of new newsreaders, there are new, young hacks who will all be encouraged to go on air, rather than just do the grunt work. Nobody at the station is on a BBC level salary, there are no fat cats or superstar wages. If Pongo prefers silence, why moan about a radio station he dislikes. I don't watch BBC sport or news, but I still pay for a licence. That's because I'm a grownup and don't spit the dummy if there's anything I don't like. And finally, these comparisons between the three Manx stations are a nonsense. Manx Radio has a specific remit for mixed local programming (in return for part funding) that the 'more music' stations don't. That's not to disparage them, they do a good job and I assume return a profit. And the new morning girl on Energy is top class. A fool and his money.....
I'm no great fan of Manx Radio and rarely listen to it. As a public service broadcaster goes though I think it does a pretty good job and from a taxpayer's point of view fairly efficiently. What's the grant they get? Around a million? Compare that to what the island pays the BBC in the form of TV licences, that'll be much more. And at least MR part fund their operation commercially, I've no idea by how much but I would have thought at a conservative estimate at least 50%. The BBC on the other hand are entirely funded by taxpayers. I do listen to BBC radio quite a lot, but I think in terms of efficiency they could learn a lot from MR. I think MR is mainly aimed at an older age group and some of the special interest stuff they have on there reflects that - but I guess if you were into that sort of thing then the quality is quite good for the money. RTE radio is also very good but the Irish pay 160 euro licence fee so again very expensive in comparison.

All pop and chat sounds like the same drivel to me. Including from the BBC. Edited December 17, 2021 by pongo

pongo
I would be happy to see the BBC become a subscription service @Stu Peters I look forward to broadcasting being online only. I cannot control what shops choose to play. But I can choose not to visit them. I should not have to listen to it in public spaces - the NHS etc. Edited December 17, 2021 by pongo

A fool and his money.....
Wasn't television meant to have killed radio off years ago too? The exact opposite happened. As a form of media I think broadcast radio is easily my favourite and one of the most versatile. Podcasts and the like can be brilliant but radio is just effortless entertainment, especially when you're busy doing something else.
