manxchatterbox
The Corpy don't object to Coasters application to have an outside dining area under an awning with removable furniture posts and screens....just hope Coasters are environmentally responsible and do the green thing and don't use outdoor patio heaters... Declan
Fuck the stinking environment. The Government is honour bound (since they banded indoor smoking) to supply those things to every pub and cafe on the Isle of Man. Free of charge.
Gladys
Yes,I look forward to having some pavement cafe-type experience; very nice way of passing an evening. But it would be good to have some heating in this less than pavement cafe climate that we have!

The Government is honour bound (since they banded indoor smoking) to supply those things to every pub and cafe on the Isle of Man. Free of charge. Good God man. Dont you realise mcb has enough of a burden paying for the entire expenditure of Douglas Town Council from her £9:00 / week rates bill without having to fund patio heaters, for council house tenants, dining al fresco, who are addicted to nicotine, from her income tax liability. Declan
It can come from cigarette duty, savings made by the NHS from not having to treat smokers with pnumonia and from the pension contributions of smokers who die before they reach retirement age. The Government get a good deal out of smokers it is time they gave something back.

Charles Flynn
I don't have a problem with people enjoying themselves as it reduces stress levels so there is less impact on our overworked NHS. I believe in sustainability so economic, environment and social factors have all to be considered and put in perspective. It is inevitable in the IOM that some heaters will have to be used to stop chilblains. However if you wrap up well from old sweaters obtained and recycled from Oxfam this will be of great benefit to the environment. Mind you the shops won't like it! Chinahand
For more information on the ecological damage Patio heaters generate check out The Guardian As the article says it would be more sensible for the cafes to provide individual hair driers to their customers to warm them selves up with. At least then the energy used would pay a carbon tax and come from a technology which attempts to reduce green house gases ... regularly using a Patio Heater is about the most environmentally unfriendly thing a person can do!!! ... that and using a JCB to do the daily commute into work!
