Saving Energy Costs

In the House of Commons recently:-

The United Hospitals Health and Social Services Trust has installed and is successfully operating a wind turbine electricity generator on the Antrim hospital site.

Mr. Gregory Campbell: To ask the Secretary of State for Northern Ireland how much Antrim hospital has saved in electricity costs as a result of the wind turbine in operation at the site.

Paul Goggins: The Antrim hospital of the United Hospitals Health and Social Services Trust has reduced its payments to the supply authority by a total of £62,437.26 (excluding VAT), for the period February 2005 to April 2006 inclusive, as a result of the investment in the wind turbine.

What plans if any does Nobles Hospital Management have to install a wind turbine to generate electricity?

What plans if any are there for a wind turbine to generate electricity for the new Jurby prison?

If no plans why not??

NIMBY-ism, although a recent application for a 6kW private turbine in St. Judes was recently approved.

MCB .. the economic incentive to build a wind turbine to provide power for the prison or the hospital does not exist in the Island. The situation is different in N Ireland. The owner of the wind turbine qualifies for ROCs and these can be traded at a price which should be sufficient to offset the high capital cost of building the wind turbine.

Isle of Man based generators cannot qualify for ROCs. Without ROCs, or some other financial incentive, it is more expensive to generate power from on shore wind power than it is to buy off the utility, in this case MEA, or to utilise a CHP plant burning some sort of fossil fuel.

You will, no doubt, be pleased to learn that the hospital has CHP plant and, I believe, generates or plans to generate most or all of its own power.

CHP schemes are a cost effective method of meeting energy and power requirements at medium to large sized sites.

..but surely the argument should be for using renewables not finding a reason why not??

ROCs are intended to make it financially viable to generate from renewable sources. There are other measures in place to make it less attractive to generate from fossil fuels.

Here in the Island none of these measures apply. However it is possible to buy power generated by renewables and import it over MEAs cable. This would be very expensive but it is an option.

Regarding generation from renewables on Island the situation is distinctly different to the UK.

There is no renewable obligation no ROCs [although we may be able to qulaify for LECs if exported over the cable to UK]. So it is more expensive to generate from renewable sources than from fossil fuels.

If we say we are prepared to pay the price for green energy then lets go for it. However, I do not belive the Island would be willing to pay any more for energy than it is already.

The pragmatic and most cost effective option for sites such as the hospital is to implement a CHP solution.

We could then expect to see recovery rates of 75% or more from our energy compared to the 46% an aero derivative CCGT plant such as that at Pulrose is capable of.
