Amadeus
Now, that's what I call a train station: The new central station in Berlin, now officially opened and the biggest train station in the whole of Europe. 500.000 cubic meters of concrete, 80.000 tons of steel, thousands of individually manufactured and hand-polished glass panels for the 321x160 meter long roof, and god knows what else - all, so around 1000 trains a day can stop there - pure engineering perfection... WilDDog
he track superstructure is mounted on a resilient bearing plate, which provides a decoupling of the track superstructure and subsoil, and thus leads to a significant reduction in vibrations in the subsoil induced by railway operations. Lonan3
And just to add a special tribute to German efficiency - Operators of Europe's largest railway station have admitted their mistake in building only one set of toilets. Passengers at Berlin's new £480m train station have already been complaining about the queues for the loos. About 30,000 people use the new multi-level station each day and it has also attracted visits from shoppers and tourists. Station spokesman Holger Auferkamp admitted the lack of washroom facilities was a problem, in particular for women. "We realise there is a problem and are now planning to build a second set of toilets as quickly as possible," he said.
