Irony?

From IOM Online:

A COPY of the Ramsey town plan has been symbolically burned outside the town hall as a protest against a planning decision.

Graham Joughin carried out the demonstration after planning approval was given in principle, to D. Hepworth of Hereford, for the building of three houses and garages on the corner of Hughenden Terrace and Glen Elfin Road.

Mr Joughin's home, Glen Villa, Glen Elfin Road, is adjacent to the plot.

He maintains that the town plan strongly recommends that the plot in question – a former orchard – should remain as green space.

He has written to the planning committee as well as Local Government and the Environment Minister John Rimington, Ramsey Commissioners and wildlife and conservation groups.

So in protest at his wishes not to spoil the enviroment being ignored, he lights a bonfire?

Nice.

Yeah it is so ironic isn't it (not). Have you seen the area of land? What damage to the environment would be done by cutting down those trees and putting up those houses and Ramsey losing that green space in an already built up area?

Burning a few bits of paper in protest has given much greater exposure to this topic than just say standing outside the town hall and shouting (or whatever). Graham has also helped set up the IOM Woodland Trust and before that personally planted many, many thousands of trees over many years and probably done more for the environment than you have ever even dreamed about doing.

He could have just ceremoniously placed the plans in a paper recycling bin, then played a subversive, anti-development, yet environmentally friendly rhythm on some bongo drums though.

He could and maybe should have but cannot really be accused of being un-environmental. He's pretty good on the bongos as well!

here here Ringwraith.

The Isle of man is being sold to the highest bidder, with no thought nor concern for the environment.

Hasn't that always been the case? The envirnment was never a high priority.

Is there any information regarding the Isle of Man Woodland Trust? As it doesn't appear to exist in the world of google.

Three references on Google: Linky Clickety thing

One I don't understand .. one is a link to ManxForums :P

The last one is a link to gov.im which seems to be a listing of registered Charities at the Registry. Woodliand Trust info follows:

Wonderful! We're always bemoaning the fact that the people of the Isle of Man are too damned indolent to mount a decent protest about anything - but what happens when someone does? We condemn it as inappropriate!

So it was Straps Joughin then!

Nice one Straps, the publicity isn't wasted, this could be the start of the de-forestation of IOM.

The new wood is lovely and covered in garlic, a haven behind a large new development of big houses. It was given to them because it would have cost more for the developer to clear than it would have earned in profit, now that's truly ironic. They need help with insurance which cost about £1500 a year, contributions gratefully received.

Straps action would hurt the environment less than generating the electricity needed to post these comments. If I had been on island I would have gladly lent him a lighter to ignite the plans, they are really amateurish IMHO.

I do hope they've made provision for off road parking for these extra houses, it's bad enough as it is and a nightmare during TT with all the extra cars from May Hill trying to get spaces there too.
