manxchatterbox
This article caught my eye about how long commerciaql stations in Ireland are allowed to broadcast adverts for on a per hour basis. Should public sector MR be constrained on how much adverrtising per hour it broadcasts? irish Independent:- SOME 30 broadcasters were notified that they breached advertising and sponsorship codes in 2005, with most breaches relating to betting services According to the annual report of the Broadcasting Commission of Ireland (BCI), 18 of the 28 commercial radio stations also breached the 10-minute hourly limit on ads. The BCI, which licenses 54 commercial and community radio services as well as TV stations, said it issued a notice to all contractors about ads for bookies, due to the high level of breaches. "Competitions where betting odds were available from particular bookmakers were particularly identified as an issue," said the annual report. Under the new draft General Advertising Code, published last Friday, bookies can advertise their services, but cannot give details of special offers, or encourage people to bet. Other breaches of codes last year related to restrictions on ads for cosmetic surgery, slimming products and hypnotherapy services. The appropriate use of the word "natural" in ads also came under the spotlight, as did testimonials by well-known sports people for services. Some 18 radio station were notified by the broadcasting regulator that they had breached advertising time limits during the year. The level of Irish music being played on stations was also raised with a number of stations. The radio industry took in €100.5m in ad revenue last year, compared with just under €60m in 2000.
