The Island's Lifeline Or A Tightening Noose?

my point was not that the ralliers got a poor deal - at present anyone travelling appears to get that - but that most of the money spent by them probably went to the SPCo.

You seem to have an axe to grind about the rally. They do also spend money on hotels, eating out, petrol, and other entertainment costs. Plus - quite frankly - the global publicity the Island gets from hosting an event that has seen a Manxman again put the Island on the map in respect of the British Championship.

The PR value alone is better than most other Manx sporting events - most of the Google News alerts yesterday (and there were a lot of them) were rally related giving good profile for the IOM and successful Manx sportsmen.

The Super(Sea/Shit)Cat2 is a total disaster for the SPC. They were forced to charter till 2011, its a total banger, and spent 2002 laid up and stripped to sattisfy Seaco. THe engineers have done something pretty good to keep her running as well as they have done, because it is a mechanical disaster. SSC3 was probably removed from manx service in 2003 so Seaco could get rid of the SPC and get rid of the SSC2, another problem of theirs.

The fuel costs are extremely high because of the fuel type, as it the charter costs, the charter may have cost up to £8-10 Million over the last 3 years (@ £6k a day rising till 2011). the SCIOM was much better fuel wise, but not fuel cost/car ratio.

The Ben is supposed to make quite a profit though......
