The Old Git
The quality of fish & chips is not what it was when we were youngsters, so there may be some truth in this. Is port jack open again yet? edit: chippy No, there's still a sign telling you to use the Terrace Chippy I stopped going to Port Jack a couple of years ago when the quality went down badly
joeyconcrete
I stopped going to Port Jack a couple of years ago when the quality went down badly I heard a rumour it was to become a chinese takeaway - seriously. I stopped going too, couldn't hack the strangely illuminous mushy peas - the Terrace is the nicer chippy around Douglas but there prices seem to have took a hike recently too. I'm sure it was like £1.10 for jacket spud, then an extra £1.10 if you wanted cheese on it (Note - I dont buy Jacket spuds from Chippies!)
The Old Git
I heard a rumour it was to become a chinese takeaway - seriously. I stopped going too, couldn't hack the strangely illuminous mushy peas I normally go to City Cottage if I fancy a chinese takeaway. The last time I had fish and chips from Port Jack the fish had been reheated so much so it was basically a rock hard outer shell with a shrunken grey rubbery bit of fish inside. Tempus Fugit
Much more interesting was the Transport Minister being demolished for his lacklustre performance in a crisis, just after 12.30 today. I almost choked on my hot pastrami on rye... Stu and Beth had been honing their hatchets for the occasion
manxmedia
They needed a good item like that to make up for the advert for a guy to talks to the dead. Did you hear it on Mandate this week? A woman talks about this guy coming over next week...and tickets are available from......!!!! Such a weak item on a day when there was go much major news around. I think someone had taken their eye off the ball.
ccm
At the end of the day Manx Radio is a local radio station. If you're familiar with radio you'll be aware there's national radio (BBC, Classic, Talk Sport etc) and local (Manx, etc). The only difference with Manx is they get a huge handout of tax payers money while other local stations across the UK don't and therefore have to rely on advertising revenue. You can chuck millions of pounds at Manx employ 20 'qualified' journalists at Manx but it won't improve their service because it is LOCAL RADIO i.e. reports on local issues, tree falls down, old woman loses stick etc. I've often wondered why they seem to have so many staff whereas Three FM and Energy FM have a couple yet from what I've heard seem to do just as good a job. Remember folks, in case you've not worked out what I'm saying, MANX RADIO is LOCAL RADIO. Just tune in to other similar stations in the UK and listen to their news. Grumble
...(making good points until)...I've often wondered why they seem to have so many staff whereas Three FM and Energy FM have a couple yet from what I've heard seem to do just as good a job. Yeah - 3FM and Energy are probably JUST as good at current affairs, documentary, political debate, community programming, Manx language, sports coverage, specialist music shows, Tynwald and Keys broadcasts, Island Life series, religious programmes, phone-ins...it's just a shame they don't really DO any! Fact is, it takes people to make original programmes like these, whereas wall-to-wall music can be done with a pretty basic PC. That's not knocking 3FM or Energy, just answering your question. lisner
It seems we all like to knock Manx Radio every now and again. As one lady quoted a saying on the Mannin Line during a debate about the future and funding of Manx Radio: "I used to complain about my shoes until I got no feet". Manx Radio will certainly lose street credibility when they stop being impartial to Government and politicians. I think parts of this thread show that that certainly hasn't happened yet! Manx Radio - keep on keeping on
manxmedia
Sunday 10 a.m. Did I hear the MR news correctly? Various local stories, then "stories further afield". Near the end of the items was...BA have cancelled all domestic flights from Heathrow and Gatwick. No local information added to the item. Surely that is a major local story effecting many people tring to get on or off the rock today! Quick get J moss to the airport!
Manxman In Exile
I think the old format was far simpler. Can we please put out a plea for those of us who have to access the MR website for news because we can't listen to the radio. Please, please, please change the totally rubbish unuseable format of that site. Its dire. You can't use it. The menus change halfway through viewing, its all content and no news, the headlines don't list properly. Please change it its totally rubbish. How did you do that? The Old Git
Sunday 10 a.m.Did I hear the MR news correctly? I heard the 2pm news on Sunday. Two cars had been scratched in Port Erin and some bint from the UK thinks it's a good thing that a max speed limit idea has been dropped. Must be a bit quiet on the local news front
lisner
Yes, it must be. Isn't that quite wondeful though? Better than making news up or getting stories from UK that don't concern us whatsoever. I'm glad the naughty people who mug and steal and cause bad news take Sunday off too.
scoobe
Smidgeon off topic maybe, but I rarely catch the Mandate's when they are live, so I use the listen again, but sometimes its not updated for hours & hours, and you can't tell whether its today's mandate, or last weeks (until obviously you listen to some of it). And further off topic, the two music shows I like best, Dan Davies Experience, and the Stu Peters Rock Show, are never on the listen again, only Saturday show listed is Carnaby Street. Is it only Chris Williams who know how to use the record button?? I do think, generally, Manx Radio is very good, and I personally can't fault their news coverage.
