Isle Of Man Cuts Tax To Tempt Super-rich

Hasn't Ramsey rejected a proposed marina once already, you don't get a second bite at the cherry!

At the time the marina would have invigorated the whole quay area but they had a vote and decided they preferred to have run down shops, grubby pubs and general mess as it maintained Ramsey's character.

Sometimes you can keep the character of a place and re-invigorate it and it would have been nice to see how Ramsey would have benefitted. As you say nobody is offering to throw that sort of money around again.

We do however have the market cornered when it comes to charity shops and depressing boarded up commercial premises.

This is a problem elsewhere. You have a drive at present to get wealthy people over here which is good because it generates wealth, but they come here spend a million on a reasonable house and then get bombarded with hassle from a bunch of old gimmers about planning regs, rights of way, the fact that they are ruining the Manx way of life, and then they piss off again because they didn't move here for grief they just wanted to move their money here and spend it quietly.

Clarkson is a good example. He's profiled the Island well in programmes like Top Gear where the camera work is stunning and really sells the Island on prime time TV. Then he moves here and gets perpetual grief. He's the sort of bloke who likes a fight so he'll hang it out, whereas anyone else would have buggered off again by now because they don't need the hassle.

There has to be progress, but progress as the best compromise between old and new.

Ramsey is a classic example. But look at Jonathan Irving in Peel too. He's just a local chap trying to tart the place up again to restore some of its passed glory and everyone and his wife in Peel vilifies the guy. His only crime seems to me to be the fact that he's trying to make Peel a nicer place to live.

....

However, the hardcore fucking moaning fucking granny brigade kicked into action, and decided .....

... the myopic grannies, . . .

.....

The old gimmers sit in their bungalows

....

There is more than a touch of fascism about this post, there is certainly an awful lot of vitriole and offence.

Perhaps you should ask the BNP to come up to stand in Ramsey at the next election and add grannies to their list of hatred for you.

:)

Well it appears Ramsey may just get that second bite of the cherry.

Just heard on EnergyFM News that the DOT are going to re-visit the idea and will hold discussions with the commissioners.

Hopefully this time around, people won't fuck the idea up.

Thats interesting to hear. I still think that there would be some mileage in this given that Ramsey would be a good gateway to the Western Isles and Ireland. Hopefully the major re-fit work that the shipyard are doing under the white Rasmey shroud will spark a bit of interest in the area. Still have doubts about the suitability of the marina with a tidal access but I guess it worked for Douglas.

Chopley, you've excelled yourself with that post.

Sir, you are a fucking star and an asset to the town of Ramsey.

:D

Agreed, good post, except....

There are people in the North other than the blue rinse brigade and their voices and opinions are as equally valid as the older folk.

Only if expressed with equal or exceeding vigor though...

...and therein lies the difference <_<

Whoops, meant to add:

Apparently (unconfirmed officially as yet) the new Ramsey Swimming pool has an estimated start date to be built on the Peveril Plot.

This means no other development beside the proposed Marina to offset the build costs through land sale and future rates income.

Don't count on it. Whilst a certain man is still alive there will be no marina.

And it wasn't for the want of trying on the majority of the Commissioners part. IIRC, it was RAID at the forefront that at first pushed for nothing at all to be built on the Peveril plot with Wilf commenting it was the only green land left in the town (Mooragh? Poyl Doohey?) but the second option for them was a community centre type arrangement which was only ever going to cost the town. (No-one realise about the various halls available within Ramsey Grammer School?)

BTW Great post ChopleyTurnip, very good points. I also remember Mr Bell's U-turn on the subject of the Pier.

However, Ripsaw is right. It was the very vocal minority of RAID that whipped up certain residents of the town to make a stand against the proposed Marina. If the silent majority had been a little less 'silent' then we may have already been well on the way to having a Marina in Ramsey.

The surveyors/engineers Dean & Dyball spent a lot of our time and money on establishing the fact that a Marina would be not only viable, but would certainly help to regenerate the town itself.

You can lead a horse to water people but you cannot make him drink it.

Let's hope the raiders die off after all most of the "Younger population" of ramsey were for it.

It was the twits who had boats in the harbour that kicked of because they didnt want to pay for the extra fee's.

I think it would have been great for Ramsey, go anywhere in the UK like the solent and you will see how much a marina transforms a run down place.

Trouble is i could not see wilfy in sailing gear as he would look like captain birds eye
