In fairness - and although Energy doesn't float my boat either - how many people that voted "Not at all" listen to radio on a regular basis?

Perhaps there should have been a "I don't really listen to radio", or "I don't really listen to local radio" option?

I voted "Not at all" and do listen to quite a bit of radio, usually the mornings and on the way home from work and all morning up to the Mannin Line on Sunday, and that is only because other things have to be done.

I know MR gets a panning here, but it really is a very good local station. It has the right mix of local news, history, current affairs and events. Brian Stowell is particularly good,; not Manx-centric, but Celtic- centric and often some very interesting slants on things. Last Sunday he was explaining just how many words, often slang, have Celtic origins. It won't set the world on fire, but it is interesting.

There probably aren't too many radio stations in the UK that have the amount of local culture and heritage as their staple diet that MR has; they may carry local advertising, but that will most likely be the only thing that sets them apart. Whereas, we have a station that gets chin deep into the things that make the IOM what it is.

May not be the most slick operation, and, yes, there are some cringe worthy bits, but overall I reckon MR does a damn good job given the size of the Island and the remit given to MR.

Just wish they would play more Jim Reeves!

it certainly has to be amongst the best. To be fair Gladys, Radio Merseyside does a lot more than Manx Radio does in promoting local culture and history ..but there again it has a lot more to choose from ..from the slave trade through Beatles and onwards.

But that is the point LW, MR create an interest and that reinforces the culture.

Hey Im not arguing with you

Just pointing out there is more than one local station doing its bit as a proper local station.

I totally agree with you.

For what its worth Radio Merseyside gets the same criticism as Manx Radio does from the "we want music all day" brigade.

It also gets a lot of praise for its commitment to local history and culture. Its a pity Manx Radio isnt appreciated a little bit more as well.

I listen to radio1 all day, can't be doing with energy, they play all the shite that radio1 won't play, rubbish dance "classics", old stuff that should've stayed forgotten(3 do a much better job of old stuff as does radio2), supposed to be the station for the younger generation, but they seem to play nothing new, ie.waiting till its charted before playing it, and even then its only the likes of McFly etc, instead of taking chances on some of the promo's they receive.

Me. None of the stations play my type of stuff, so I tend to use the radio just for news, which is better on manx.

3fm - what a load of nonesense that is! it's the same old crap everyday and someone told me its not live half the time, what use is that. I stick to Radio 2, Dave Cherry on Energy and Manx Radio for the football.

if i want to listen to decent music that I like.... i put on my CD's - why is everyone so obsessed with local radio stations? for christ sake, if you don't like something, don't listen... the little sod at work tried to put Radio 1 on until we pulled rank.... i'm sure there are better things to get wound up over, like coppers booking people for illegal number plates, when half their own private cars are not what you would call 'in specification' etc etc

I GOT DONE FOR NUMBER PLATES!!! xxx

Should have put the correct ones on in the first place then - not a hard thing to do, me thinks...

/off thread: I'm always wondering how people still manage to get black plates on new cars - when I got a cherished plate for my old (84') Merc a while back, the guy behind the counter wanted to see the logbook before he took the order, yet there's a relatively new (definitely past 89) S-Class parked on South Quay all the time, sporting black plates - it might look really good on that car (black plates on a black merc), but how did he manage to get them?

well i cant get my head around why it's ok for an old car to have a black & silver plate and not a new one, have you seen how quick a good old MK1 escort can go!

its rediculous. The Govt should use de-reg and allow the black & silver plates again so long as they are clear at the regulatory 50 yds or whatever it is!

Maybe he ordered them off the net and the Police haven't got around to pulling him over yet dude.

Yeah, I guess that's a possibility, although it's only parked a stone throw away from the police station at lord street - maybe they will take a right turn there at some point and notice it - what's the bleedin point of putting something on your car of which you know it's illegal in the first place? Just plain silly...
