I voted "Not at all" and do listen to quite a bit of radio, usually the mornings and on the way home from work and all morning up to the Mannin Line on Sunday, and that is only because other things have to be done.

I know MR gets a panning here, but it really is a very good local station. It has the right mix of local news, history, current affairs and events. Brian Stowell is particularly good,; not Manx-centric, but Celtic- centric and often some very interesting slants on things. Last Sunday he was explaining just how many words, often slang, have Celtic origins. It won't set the world on fire, but it is interesting.

There probably aren't too many radio stations in the UK that have the amount of local culture and heritage as their staple diet that MR has; they may carry local advertising, but that will most likely be the only thing that sets them apart. Whereas, we have a station that gets chin deep into the things that make the IOM what it is.

May not be the most slick operation, and, yes, there are some cringe worthy bits, but overall I reckon MR does a damn good job given the size of the Island and the remit given to MR.

Just wish they would play more Jim Reeves!

Come on though Gladys, manx radio does get a manx licence fee of some sort, it should be bloody perfect, its like a poor copy of BBC Lancs, (that is dire anyway), i used to drive douglas - preston (Via Heysham) in the late 80's regularly and apart from Radio Lancashire, there was only red rose radio . Both then are like what manx radio is now! appalling!

culture and celtic, i mean come on, who are you trying to impress? Good to hear Johnny Walker back on Radio 2. he was on this afternoon after Dale Winton in case anyones remotely interested?

They get a subvention (as MCB will, no doubt, tell you), which, from what I can gather, is more like a subsidy than a complete underwriting of their shortfall so expecting perfection is unrealistic. The IOM is a very small town by UK standards and I doubt that a UK town with an equivalent population would have a dedicated radio station, let alone anything near the standard of MR.

What it does (at the risk of conjuring up Royston Vasey) is provide a local radio service with plenty of local content. If that doesn't suit then there are alternatives, but they do not have the local content.

As for trying to impress, not at all, I was just illustrating the MR programming that I enjoy.

well i cant get my head around why it's ok for an old car to have a black & silver plate and not a new one, have you seen how quick a good old MK1 escort can go!

its rediculous. The Govt should use de-reg and allow the black & silver plates again so long as they are clear at the regulatory 50 yds or whatever it is!

I assume black plates don't show up on gatzo or number plate recognition equipment and they'll blame the EU for having to intoduce them :(

I can't get over the cars you see with yellow plates on the front, or plates which still have the pink protection on them (or is that some sort of camera-confusing scam they've been sold)

... and manx registrations with GB or other flags on the end instead of gbm, they're asking to be pulled over inthe UK if they venture that far, I know of someone with a 1+mn plate who spent a couple of hours in a police station in England some years ago due to ignorance by traffic cops

~ but how has a dicussion about radio got onto cars ;)

Back on subject - I never listen to energy due to the monotonous boom boom boom 'stuck needle' cr4p they play, but presumably someone likes it

Is there 2 Energy FM’s?

TF's comment is obviously not the Energy FM I listen to, or is this someone who just repeats parrot fashion what he is told? Either that or he is stuck in a time warp, when Energy first started 5 years ago it played a lot of dance music but not anymore (apart from Paul Hughes’s show on a Saturday).

Ha ha. What is it that people want from Manx Radio then? Because it seems like they can't win whatever they do.

I'm not a fan, I'll be honest. But I know some people who think it's great listening. You can't 'localise' every single thing - the Isle of Man is just not big enough. So from what I see, Manx do local features where they can, and when they can't they fill it up with standard 'local radio' programming like Jazz shows and Brass bands and the like.

There are a finite amount of 'local stories' to tell on the Isle of Man, and Manx does its best to tell some of them. But you can't expect it 24 hours a day, and besides, it'd be boring if that's all they did.

Energy is a different kettle of fish - some good music, some good presenters, but it's always going to be 'Radio 1 Light' for me. And why listen to Light when I can get the Real Thing.

Anyway, podcasting will kill all the radio stations off anyway in the end, so they're all fighting for a share in a dying market.

No, they can't please everyone, it's true. But currently they all seem to be trying to please the same people. It's either chart shite, 80's shite, dance shite or shite for old people. Where's the new music? Where's the live music? Where's the alternative stuff?

They're local stations who, to a greater or lesser extent, depend on advertising revenue.

Live music? Okay, I'll concede that the local scene is very active and the stations ought to be reflecting that by recording concert or highlights of concerts for broadcasting.

I'm not quite sure what you mean by 'new' music, but if it has a similar following to 'alternative' music then there simply isn't a large enough audience for on this island to attract the advertisers.

Live music is great under the right circumstances - either in that you're a fan of the band, or you're having a beer and enjoy the show.

In my experience 'new' or 'local' music doesn't translate well to radio or TV. It's great if you have top musos playing well, or playing covers, but the majority of local bands I've seen in pubs over here have been pretty punkish, but with even more attitude.

That's vaguely bearable when you're in the same room with them, but VERY wearing if you're listening at home, work or in the car.

Yep, I realise that they're stations already broadcasting to a niche market, so they want to hit the biggest lister pool with the music, but that just means all three stations sound exactly the same. I'd have though from 3 stations broadcasting all day that thered be room for a bit of what I'm after.

I'd have thought there'd be a bit of space for the type of things I'd want to listen to. Take Get Cape, Wear cape next week, a superb accoustic muso that would be so easy to get in a studio and knock out a few tracks. Will it happen?

Fair enough. I will concede that if Manx Radio can manage an hour each of opera, brass band, folk, C&W and big band music each week - most of which have less than universal appeal - then there ought to be room for other specialist music items, even if they have to be cut down to half an hour or so each.

Manx Radio have a programme which caters for that market.
