manxchatterbox
Heard Cllr David Christian talking on MR about the death of Ernest Ackery - the last surviving Alderman member of Douglas Corpn. DC said he voted for the abolition of the Aldermanic bench...but now he wants it brought back.... Alderman: (l"dẽr*mn), n.; pl. Aldermen (). 1. A senior or superior; a person of rank or dignity. ☞ The title was applied, among the Anglo-Saxons, to princes, dukes, earls, senators, and presiding magistrates; also to archbishops and bishops, implying superior wisdom or authority. Thus Ethelstan, duke of the East-Anglians, was called Alderman of all England; and there were aldermen of cities, counties, and castles, who had jurisdiction within their respective districts. 3. One of a board or body of municipal officers next in order to the mayor and having a legislative function. They may, in some cases, individually exercise some magisterial and administrative functions. ..at least they might act as an expenditure review committee...scrutinising what money is being spent on and whether it can be justified and is value for.. Charles Flynn
Ernest Ackary, Freeman of Douglas, Alderman, Christian, chiropodist, cricket umpire, ex-soldier, devoted husband to Irene, father and grand- father was a wonderful man - sensible, mature and full of fun till the end. He was a real practical joker and enlivened everyone's day when they met him. If the Aldermen were all like him I would vote for them to come back. The Island has lost one of its great citizens with his death. He was a survivor of Dunkirk and never forgot his mates who died. My sympathies go to Irene who nursed him unceasingly during his final years and to the family.
