mollag Posted August 25, 2006 Share Posted August 25, 2006 There will always be disputes over pronunciation, it was always Shaws Brew in my time, most often i hear now Shaws Brow, also at the bbc masts, we always heard it called The Canan [can-an] but is often now spelt and pronounced Carnane. Frances Posted August 25, 2006 Share Posted August 25, 2006 actually it is only about 4 weeks old, pub in paperback IIRC about £20 - GB has been working on place names for the last decade (partly financed by MNH) and his researches are available in a 7 volume publish on demand format when last checked cost somewhat over £100/volume (quite why GB hasn't tried a CD ROM I don't know - must better than dead trees) - the new book is a very much cut down version (eg most of the sequence of name changes with dates is missing - thus you miss out on the historical aspect of changes in pronunciation), he adds to Kneens 1920's book (see my site tho I had to skip Kneens prononciation guide) corrects some and has more discussion on pre Norse names Link to comment Share on other sites More sharing options...
