manxchatterbox
anyone else noticed the demolishion of the old Bridson&Horroxy buildings behind M&S....isn't that where the old cattle market used to be??...when do the archeologists move in?? Cattle Market Street. 1818 R.C.I.P. (also Cattle Market), 1833 John Wood. Market Street. There seems to be no record of this cattle-market used as such. http://www.isle-of-man.com/manxnotebook/fu...t/pn1925/do.htm
Gladys
Would there be much of archealogical value in a cattle market site? Wouldn't it have been on the shoreline in any case, bearing in mind Strand Street is so called because it was the old strand? Have to say I was surprised to see the old B&H buildings demolished, they were quite quaint in their own way.
manxchatterbox
what are the plans for the site? surely the building line will be restricted so it will fit in with the plan for a wider alternative to the carriageway that's there now... Rhumsaa
they can;t widen it too much as the building next to it is recently developed to that width

Declan
http://www.isle-of-man.com/manxnotebook/fu...t/pn1925/do.htm Hmm that says Fancy Street has disappeared....it hasn't, and i'm sure someone on here has the pictures to prove it? Fancy Street still exists in runs around the back of the Old Ridgeway pub, and Bradford and Bingley, parallel to Ridgeway Street and Duke Street off the road opposite the Co-op with the manky old pet shop on the corner and it comes out onto Lord Street. I think in the olden days it must have continued across where Victoria Street has been built, which would bring it out about where B&H is/was. Albert Tatlock
This map seems a good one. Even looks like Strand Street used to be called Sand Street.
