Declan
oh...that's it... so what is the street called that runs from Victoria Street down besides the old gas company showroom?? Actually, I think that road is Thomas Street, not the one by Havana, which might be Wellington Street. What was the name of the road the Dog's Home used to stand on? lard
And didn't that street used to continue to back Strand Street/Market Street, but when the current Marks & Spencer site was a car park the fact that it was actually a street was 'forgotten' and all that land sold to build M & S. Could someone explain how in law that street (a public right of way) was removed. I realise in 'Manx' terms the street was sort of lost and then sort of sold and then well, there's 'nothing' we can do about it now but I am talking in law :- is that Street still there along with the public right of way. ps: The answer is yes and yes. although I will be pleased for someone to direct me differently. Gladys
Sympathise Lard, but I think the fudge was to require M&S to have a rear entrance which allowed people to walk through to Shoe Zone and so the right of way is preserved, as long as you want to go that way during shop opening hours. "This is not just a public right of way, this is a right of way plucked from the developers' desk and nurtured until it became the most exclusive right of way ever to be sampled, topped by our exclusive car park that no f*cker can ever get in to. And if you spend Stg 35 at M&S, we will give you haf a pound of the most exclusive Drumgold Street, one of the best street names ever, but we have taken it and covered it in the finest Belgian chocolate, etc. etc."
Gladys
Oh, just to add, I think there was a bit of a furore about M&S years' back when they were locked into a ludicrously low rent at their old site where Boot's now is. Seems you just can't win!
Declan
I was told, that if you wanted access at any time M&S had to provide it. So if you rang the bell a nightwatchman would have to come, open the door for you, then escort you through the shop and let you out the back. Don't know if anyone ever tried this, since walking along Thomas Street would be more convenient.
John Wright
No there was a road closure order, but as a sop M&S did put the back door in to retain a pedestriam thoroughfare during opening hours. Same happened at the Strand Centre where a whole square went ..and what was it called? and all the small streets and the square under Chester Street car park and going back to the 1920's the realignment of Big Well Street and then in the 1950's the building of Shaws brow Car Park, lots of lost streets there! Nothing new.
