Lonan3
The front-runners Kofi Annan has this week begun his last UN General Assembly session as Secretary General. He must stand down by the end of the year, and the race to succeed him is gathering pace. Five people have already declared their candidacy, but it is possible that Mr Annan's successor will not be among them. There is still time for others to throw their hats into the ring. There is an understanding that the next secretary general should come from Asia, as part of a tradition to rotate the job between regions. BAN KI-MOON, SOUTH KOREA JAYANTHA DHANAPALA, SRI LANKA PRINCE ZEID AL-HUSSEIN, JORDAN SURAKIART SATHIRATHAI, THAILAND SHASHI THAROOR, INDIA (I can just imagine Rog urging everyone to vote for Prince Zeid al-Hussein to become the first muslim secretary general!) Chinahand
I know absolutely nothing about this, but I'd be interested if a Chinese was suggested. China doesn't play a large part in the diplomatic world. Having one become general secretary might encourage them to take a more active role; as is begining to happen with North Korea etc.
