Credit Card Fraud

Ive heard the saying it will never happen to me well, I have just been contacted by MBNA Bank and they have informed me that they suspect my credit card has been used without me knowing. On checking out transactions it appears that some bugger has got hold of my details and went on a spending spree in the UK last week, Airline tickets, hire cars, Hotels and some expencive gifts by the look of thinks.

So its worth checking you cards. Be Warned.

We had the same thing happen a few years ago. Our new card never arrived on the island but was taken on a major shopping spree in London.

We refused to pay, the card co started adding interest and threatening to sue and it went on for months. It got very nasty and scary and we got very concerned about those bad credit listing you get put on.

It ended with a visit to the IOM by the fraud squad after it was discovered that a number of other folk had the same thing happen at the same time.

Be careful.

Happened to me two weeks ago. The details of my HSBC Maestro were compromised, and the feckers attempted to go on a spending spree after making small 'test' transactions on National Express tickets in the Milton Keynes area.

They then tried to buy and LCD TV from Argos and a sofa from DFS, totalling £1500.

The bank thinks the details were taken by a dodgy member of staff at a certain computer components retailer based in Dorking which specialises in RAM.

All very annoying and rather scary.

Stopped using MBNA - I had more problems with MBNA credit cards than I have ever had with anything else, apparently the parent company in the USA (ahem) 'Lost' the details of over 4 million card holders. I had over £10,000 put on my card in 1 week (even though the limit was £5k), and my address was used to regsiter numerous other credit accounts. Spent my money to get my name cleared, stopped using MBNA and so far so good.

Thankfully, wasn't too bad when it happened to me - someone used my card to purchase lots of stuff in Jamaica. I only realised when I was told that the card was over its limit (and I knew I couldn't possibly have spent that much). I spoke to my bank manager, he asked whether I had been in Jamaica and when I said no, he cancelled all the transactions immediately, telling me that I would have taken a free holiday over there before telling him if I had any sense!

I was stung whilst travelling, the cunning fookers managed to clone my card details from a dodgy ATM, I didn't realise until I got an email from my ol' man saying that my card had been maxed out. Unfortunately I kept no receipts and had no way of proving that it wasn't me that spent the money and have since been stung with a rather expensive bill...

Not a nice feeling...

MBNA are the agents for many credit card companies including mine which is a Vigin Visa, they have been very good over the matter and I will not be charged for the items charged to my card. They did say that its been happening tp quite a few people on the Island, so be carefull.

Same thing with me. A few test transactions for £1.01 and o2 mobile phone top ups.

I felt I had been turned over even though the amounts were small. Bank rang me to check a few transactions which is good to know that they are watching for these things, this time anyway.

They didn't stay at some holiday cottages or buy a snooker table with your card did they? I have a feeling I may know who they are.

Credit cards have protection whereas I'm pretty sure Switch and Maestro have none. I believe it's something to do with the contractual arrangements - when you buy using a credit card, the sale is between the credit card company and the merchant and if it goes wrong they have to sort it between them.

Always credit cards for me on-line or over the phone:)

If something does go wrong, the procedure I've used is to dispute the transaction following which there will be an exchange of info and the CC company will simply not pay the merchant until they can satisfactorily prove the charge they want to make is genuine. I've had hotels rip me off by charging extra to my room account after I've checked out, for example, and successfully disputed the txn.

I also got stung about 6/7 years ago when someone with my card started buying booze from an on-line off-licence who alerted me to the potential fraud (they would have borne the cost if they hadn't checked) and at the same time some joker ordered £90 worth of condoms to go to Rumania. Looks like I spoilt what might have been a great party!

The biggest pain was cancelling the card and having to be issued with replacements for a new account.

I don't worry about this sort of thing any more. Use a credit card, the companies make an operating provision of about 1% of turnover to cover fraud (which of course they recover from the punters in the form of interest) and stick to your guns if you get ripped off
