5-demerits
A typically incorrect and misleading post Theskeat, After all the problems they had at the new Hospital when using off Island contractors, the Government have backed tracked again with the new prison. The Home Affairs Minister stated in Tynwald that it was hoped and their wish that as many local firms as possible would be employed at the New Prison. Well its not happening. Government said that some of the Islands smaller firms should get together and go in as a joint venture. The Government have not backtracked. There are quite a few local subcontractors working at the New Prison. My brother in law works for Manmec whom are a conglomerate of local firms set up so that they can adequately resource such a large contract. Several firms in a finishing trade applied and competively priced the work as a joint venture to ensure that their staff had work ahead of them, Well the Government have let them down the finishing part of the contract has been awarded to an Irish company who are not even on the DTI list of approved contractors, complaints have been made but no action is being taken. The Governments rules clearly state that contractors must be on the DTLs approved list of contrators to tender for Goverment Contracts. Again the Government has not let you down, as the Government do not award the subcontracts, they are awarded by the contractor. So you didn’t win the finishing contract, there may be numerous reasons why your tender wasn’t accepted, available resources, cost, financial stability, the list goes on. The prospective finishing contractors do not need to be on the DTI’s approved list to bid for work, they only need to be on the list to actually carry out the work. I think the Government have done a good job in putting the opportunities in place for the locals to get involved in such large contracts, it’s a credit to those that have put in the time and effort to put forward a cohesive and competitive bid to the main contractor and have subsequently been chosen to carry out the works. It’s a shame that those that have obviously not put in the time and effort to produce a cohesive and competitive package spend their time bitching on forums. Theskeat
So several Local firms with the backing of a major local construction firm are not big enough to undertake a package of work valued at £183k over two years. Local companies would like to undertake these types of jobs, think of the apprentices. Anyway who said I was interested.
