TT Centenary, A Rudderless Ship?

Max Power

The MMCC are contracted to organise and run the practicing and racing on the course - that is all. They have no say whatsoever on the "entertainment" on and off the course - that is down to the DTL etc etc.

and what a great job they are doing, see below attached circulated in plenty of notice for next year  on 11th Oct 2006.

I really hope there's something else lined up - was expecting the big bang - something really special - biggest party ever, and stuff :(

Many of the guys I know that come over from Germany every year were already dissapointed with the last TT - racing was great, but they all mentioned that everything else was exactly the same, i.e. the same entertainment, the same acts, only the prices had gone up - no imagination or progress. Considering that they are spending a small fortune on coming over here for the two weeks (and will probably spend an even bigger fortune next year), I really hope there's something else planned, otherwise we won't need to think about scrapping the TT - it will kill itself...

...or red bull air races over douglas head...

Well, yes please! Mateschitz's little drink empire has an absolute massive marketing budget (£272 million according to this article), so why not approach them, and see if they have any suitable events? Air Race would definitely be ace, but I'm sure there could be even more ways to revive tourism in general, and attract more paying visitors - action, adventure, outdoors and stuff...

The DTL has already been criticised this week by the people who ran the Rutland Hotel in Douglas (soon closing) - for lack of interest and direction in promoting tourism and investing in the future.

Someone else just did the same - clickey

Have said for some time now that the DTL are over-staffed and unimaginative! Why does it need such a big staff (and have you been in their offices at St Andrews old church - fantastic views over the bay!). When the IOM had thousands of tourists the industry was run from Victoria Street with a staff of about 6, now we've got no tourists and the staff is huge! Time to streamline/downsize whatever the management speak is. Get someone with some imaginative ideas in to run the show. The problem is that the DTL just expects that people will come anyway because it's the TT, so they (DTL) don't actually have to do anything. Well times have changed and people expect more now. Next year could be fantastic and we should be celebrating the centenary, it should be spectacular but it will take more than running the races to make it so. Tic Toc DTL!!!

You hit the nail on the head. It's been all to easy to get away with it over the years because people have just come anyway. I'm pretty sure the same will happen in 2007. More people will be over because it is the centenary, and the DTL and Cretney will be patting themselves on the back because figures were 'up on last year.'

It would be nice to have had a revolutionary year, something that is a bit fuckin special. They knew it was coming up, it's been a fixed date for a 100 years!! This should have been 3-5 years in the planning with budgeting spread over the last 5-10 years to cover some big crowd pleasers.

I doubt the bi-centenary will happen, so this should be all out special event.

8 months left and with all the will in the world it's too late to organise much properley in that time. Ast teapot said:

Tick Tock, Tick Tock.......

(Stu Peters - Can't you get the DTL on and grill them a bit??!)

I wonder if anybody in the Channel Islands is feeling mischevious as if they had a bit of spare cash maybe they might like to sponsor and take the naming rights. May be we will find it known as the Jersey TT.

Providing sponsors for the Races isn't part of "organising and running" the event. That's all left to the DTL.... In essence the TT is "owned" by the DTL and they contract the MMCC to organise and run the races. The DTL do all the sponsorship and TV contracts etc.

what i meant there was that the DTL arnt doing a great job, MMCC are the only organisation capable of running the worlds greatest sporting event and they do fantastic job in what are sometimes incredibly difficult circumstances. they are a credit to the isle of man.

I have to agree with the sentiments. It seems that, so far, they're going for much the same as usual with a few added 'attractions' for those who would have intended coming here anyway.

Over the last ten years or so it would, for example, have been possible to bring the Clypse circuit up to date and use it for specialist races - lightweight machines, sidecars, even three-wheelers for example - to give a bit of variety to the event. The Summerland site could have been used to take the funfair away from the street entertainment so that families who aren't interested in the performances could have an alternative rather than being part of that crowd.

With government support, the decorative lights on the Promenade could have had a much-needed upgrade.

A laser-light show above the bay between Douglas and Onchan Head could have been arranged and so on and so on......

These are great ideas - send them to the Minister of Fun and ask for a reply, or failing that so Sue Harrison she's the leisure chief, there's still time.............!!!

.... yeah and they should employ Jean-Michel Jarre for a week to stand on Conister rock and play his laser organ.

David Blane could do the biggest Human Hamster Wheel at laxey wheel continuing for a whole week non-stop, and then coming off on Senior Race day and collapsing saying he was near death and had to face his demons etc.

Mini Moto TT™ - (2 laps)

Dragster Racing on Rails™ - (Jet powered dragsters on Douglas Promenade but on the horsetram rails)

Fixed Hot Air Balloons™ - (watch the TT from above - various fixed hot air balloons around the course at say 150feet)

I can tell the DTL are gonna snap me up.......

<_<

EDIT: I can't spell balloons - doh!

Saw him live in Munich years ago, including the laser harp - 100% amazing show! Short clip of Oxygene 7 live in Egypt here

And we should get Christo and Jeanne-Claude to surround the Island with polypropylene fabric, as they did here - would be well good publicity...

After spending a weekend with friends who come over regularly for the TT and MGP, I was impressed to find that their local pub put on a buffet free of charge and had an MGP night showing the latest TT and MGP DVD's.

They had a whip round and raised a substantial sun of money for the helicopter fund, and everyone had a great social night talking about the Island and races past and the future.

It dawned on me then that the Isle of Man has no idea what it has in the racing. You would think that we would be so keen to build on past glories, but we seem to be hell bent on destroying what little heritage we have by sheer apathy.

No matter what, we would all miss it when it's gone!

Is there any special TV coverage planned? Live coverage with loads of on-bike stuff? A fly on the wall competitor's eye view of the event and its unique character? What about celebrities? Has anyone asked Murray Walker to participate in some way, if ever there was one a credible motor sport luminary, genuine bike first, cars later enthusiast and whose father won a TT I believe?

Without proper and substantial TV, I don't think you're going to get people paying what they ought to for the publicity they could achieve.

Mind you, the TT doesn't have to make money - the taxpayer will pick up the tab :P
