"ANYONE seeking peace and quiet should head north to the windswept and rugged terrain of Northumberland.

The county is the most tranquil place in England, according to a new audit by the Campaign to Protect Rural England (CPRE). Runners-up as havens for solitude and wilderness are Cumbria and North Yorkshire.

 

The worst place for noise, congestion and pollution is Slough, which sits under the flight paths into Heathrow and is near the M4 corridor. It even beats parts of Central London such as Piccadilly Circus.

Luton, on the M1 north of London and with its “no frills” airport, follows next in the league table for constant noise and intrusion. [but that'll be the fans cheering the Hatters to yet another victory ;) ]
