On the basis that you're not providing a reputable source for your disclosure, and that you're just an anonymous poster, I would consider his comments perfectly reasonable.

Of course, time may prove you right and him wrong, but you certainly can't accuse him of a 'no comment' political answer.

I don't think that anyone particular is to blame here.

We are a tiny Island with delusions of granduer when it comes to this sort of thing.

It only goes to emphasise that in order to provide a vital link and maintain jobs and a broad skillbase, our government needs to be more deeply involved in both the airline and shipping companies as a major shareholder.

Look at the job losses suffered by the Steam Packet engineering and maintenance sectors and the skills and infrastructure lost to the Island for ever.

This has happened in several private sector engineering concerns and it is a tragedy.

We live in a world driven by economics, and we are too small to be heard above the clamour for cash!

As for my source I think Dr Gonzos post has cleared up the need for me to reveal my source.

When it comes to blame, its got nothing to do with the IOM government its just been very very poorly managed by seconded managers that were not good enough for mainline BA so they were passed on to manage BA connect.

The top boss will be packed off with a healthly retirement after completely destroying what was (5 years ago) one of the biggest regional airlines in Europe.

@the skeat. The hangar was built and is owned by the government and leased to Ba connect now so it will go back into the governments hands Im assuming.

(I think the office blocks at the terminal are owned by the government too)

@ tatlock. Yes your right, if i didnt know for certain I shouldnt have said (For future reference I dont post rumours). But I did know for certain so I did say.

yeah and where is the market for those people to find new jobs?

Good point.

Its going to have a major impact on unemployment levels here for a while.

Airline maintenance workers and the support workers are unlikely to have any experience in the available jobs over here.

ps. what do the manx secret police look like? Im a bit worried I will be quietly "removed" for making a Government minister look like a plank.

Hehe... on his first day, the Manx Intelligence Agency gives every new Chief Minister three secret assassinations as well as the codes to the Manx nuclear arsenal.

This wouldn't, purchance, be the same Mr Downie who only a few months ago was calling for the great and glorious British (London) Airways to be given exclusive rites on routes to and from the Island, would it? Perhaps not quite big enough a faux pas to fall on his sword over but is this degree of awareness and judgement typical of our ministers? BA Connect was going to be closed, was ALWAYS going to be closed - no ifs or buts - and it is very unfortunate that many here on the Island refused to face up to the inevitable. It's just that BA decided to apply the coup de grace 18 months earlier than expected.

If the engineering facility were to close it would be very bad news not only for those employed there but it would have a knock on effect on the economy. Aircraft engineers are in short supply and I'm sure many will get jobs but it will either mean a move from the Island or a commuting lifestyle.

June 2007 is still a long way off and the government, Downie in particular, needs to get of its collective arse and go out and find some work for that hangar.

The hangars x 2 and offices plus the new parts facility are owned by BA Connect and on ground leased from the airport. Viscount house beside the terminal is on a long lease also from the Airport.

This is a very sad day for IOM which will lose a specialised capability that has taken about 17 years to get where it is today and yes aircraft Engineers are in short supply but not here.

Good luck to all...........
