'VOTERS' TURNED AWAY FROM POLLING STATIONS

ISLE of Man Today has received reports that some would-be voters have been turned away in the Manx general election because it was discovered they were not on the voters' lists.

In September, it was revealed there had been a massive drop in voter numbers from 58,133 in 2005 to 47,539.

It followed a change in practices which meant, effectively, the voters lists had been started from scratch to remove anomalies of people retaining a place on electoral rolls from previous addresses.

Following the discovery of the massive drop, the deadline for registering to vote was extended to October 6.

That saw the number of voters increased to 51,900, although with no contest in the Ayre constituency, 49,717 are eligible to vote today.

But already this morning, Isle of Man Today has been contacted by people who thought they were eligible to vote, only to have been told, when they arrived at their polling station, that they were not on the voters list.

The onus is on the voter to register and to check that they are on the register.

There was so much publicity, its unbelievable.

Poll cards only come a few days before the election, so with a cut off date in October thats no help

there was so much publicity about it thou... if people were not aware then they must have not read any local press and not listened to any local radio.... If you want to vote then you must be interested in local things, and would read papers and listen to the radio!
