Addie
What an excellent idea to be contactable by text and email as well as by phone and mail. The new email contact is jo@samaritans.org The text number is 07725 909090. The Samaritans can also be contacted on 663399 locally, or 08457 909090 in the UK. Samaritans festive help reminder Residents on the Isle of Man who struggle to cope over Christmas are being reminded that help is at hand. The island's branch of The Samaritans wants anyone who feels distressed or despairing to contact them. The festive season is a busy period for the charity, which is now contactable by text and email as well as phone. Spokesman Ray Harvey said: "We are not there to chat, but we are there to support you through the emotional feelings you may have." 'Here to help' Despite the widespread cheer that Christmas brings for many people, Mr Harvey said this was often what caused others to despair. "Christmas is a time, perhaps, when people have anniversaries of sad events, someone close to them dying for example, and they feel quite isolated when they look at families and individuals around them celebrating. "If people are lonely - and quite often they get so lonely they are desperate - they're feeling a degree of pain, which is what the Samaritans are for. "We are here to help," he added. Mr Harvey said anyone needing support - or simply someone to talk to - should ring them on 01624 663399. The text number is 07725 909090.

We used to hear a lot about the work of the Samaritans on the Island. We also used to hear a lot about high suicide rates on the Island amongst young men. Does anyone know if the situation has improved? To those who are giving up their own Xmas to staff this wonderful voluntary service I can only wish you the very best and thank you for being so unselfish. Hopefully everyone else on the Forum would add their own best wishes as well. I hope none of us ever have to call on your services.
starchild
I couldn't agree with you more Lonewolf. I have to congratulate the individuals involved who are volunteering over the Christmas period, when many will be finding it harder to cope. Who knows? They could be saving peoples' lives.
