Mountain Section One Way For Entire Tt Period?

I was reading in this week's Examiner that the mountain section of the TT course could be one way for road users for the entire TT period. The idea is it will reduce/remove the risk of a head on collision.

Personally I wouldn't mind, but I think it will just encourage road users to go even quicker than they would if it was 2 way traffic.

What are your thoughts?

I have to agree really. I'm smart enough not to consider driving the 'wrong' way over the mountain during this period anyway, but it's sensible to remove that ability from those too feckless/stupid to do likewise.

The only thing that would slow bikers down is if you put a strip of six inch nails down the racing line.

The whole issue will also need to be sensibly thought out taking into account the likely volume between Peel and Douglas on the afternoon of concerts it Ramsey to Douglas one-way (when people are heading off to Peel).

How about making it one way from Douglas to Ramsey to discourage the sort of idiots who think they are capable of racing?

I am not 100% in favour unless it is very heavily policed 24hrs a day to control the arseholes. Otherwise you might reduce the risk of head ons but increase the risk of offs into others or solid objects.

Have they also thought about the marshalls etc as if say you live in Ramsey and Marshall at the Waterworks it is a long way round to get home at the end of the race or practice. This is especially the case if you work in Douglas and go straight there after work as you will have two trips not via the mountain. I am sure there are other examples if you live elsewhere. It could be a bit of a trudge if you have to go the long way round to get to Kate's cottage rather than quickly up from the Creg depending on where you live.

At the marshals meeting I attended only 4 of about 40 marshals voted for it, from a marshaling perspective (getting to and from the points etc) only.

Lots of questions arose in the meeting, as there no doubt will be now that it has been made public.

I do think that it's a good idea. It removes the doubt and uncertainty which led to the death of one guy a couple of years ago.

I think the sheer volume of traffic will control speeds anyway.

Something should be sorted for the marshals etc though, and I think there will be a lot of delays in getting people into position, not only on the mountain, but around the course in general.

They're reckoning on 19,500 bikes coming across this year, based on the Steam Packet's provisional booking figures - there were 9,000 last year. Luckily, I'm off for the whole fortnight so I shouldn't have trouble getting to my marshalling point up on the Mountain Mile, but there are plenty of marshals who work until 5 or 5.30 and will struggle to get to their marshalling points around the course, especially on the mountain if they make it one way and they work in Douglas.

The TT organisers aren't partiuclarly ecstatic about the Peel Bay Festival either, putting 3 gigs on starting at 6pm during practice week, meaning traffic heading west from Douglas could be pretty chaotic (marshals, people watching practice, people going to the gigs and people going home from work in Douglas). I think they can see various issues with regards to practice not starting on time, so racers not getting in the necessary time on the circuit (especially the sidecar crews who always go out last, and tend to have their sessions cut short due to light anyway).

On another forum it was saying that they are looking at the Mountain Road closing completely 1 hour before the rest of the Course is due to close. The Marshals on the Mountain will then congragate at the HairPin and the Creg and be escorted up in their vehicles once the roads are closed. Afterwards, I would assume that the roads would be one way and they would need to come off at the Bungalow, Brandywell or the Creg.

That was one of the suggestions put forward by the Police at the marshal's meeting - everyone to meet at the Creg at 5.30-5.40, to then go up in convoy against the course to their marshalling spots. It was pointed out that some people will struggle to reach the Creg by 5.30 (don't finish work until then, the extra traffic on the roads, etc) and for anyone marshalling further north than, say, Bungalow, will they have time to do all the required tasks like walk their section of course looking for debris etc.

I think it's a good idea BUT they'll have to definately sort something out for the Marshals. i.e no Marshals no practice, no racing. End off TT 2007.
