Don't want to revisit the fluoride issue as the same old non-science mindsets will just be regurgitated but would just like to comment on :

I do not have a dentist and can not afford to go private!

Might not be as much difference in cost as you probably imagine*. Go and ask before just thinking that private is a rip off and NHS is all that's good. It aint! The NHS charging bands that we copied from the UK make some jobs quite expensive and NHS restrictive rules (some more restrictive on the island than NHS across) have to be rigidly followed even if this might not be best for you.

I have no doubt that our NHS dentists are doing their very best under the remit they have to work to but in my case, all that was available on the NHS was more invasive than could have been prescribed outside the rigid IOM NHS policy with which I do not agree. Private was more expensive but not by a huge amount. There is also the issue that for well over a year the NHS just saw emergencies and no regular check ups. With this attitude, prevention of any sort goes out of the window and probably contributed for the first 'new' hole in my teeth for 30 years.

*Depends on many factors obviously.

Yes they used the words "may" and "could", as hypothyroidism is 30 per cent higher than expected, so its not 100 per cent.

Scientists did study of 98 per cent of GP practices in England found that high rates of underactive thyroid were 30 per cent more likely in areas of the greatest fluoridation. It could mean that up to 15,000 people are suffering needlessly from thyroid problems which can cause depression, weight gain, fatigue and aching muscles.

Fluoride must be applied topically to be effective. Putting it in the water, thereby affecting the entire body for no good reason, can be compared to drinking sun tan lotion. Fluoridation is supposedly aimed at children. Those children supposedly in need of this drink sweetened drinks, not water. Where is the sense in this proposal. Btw. This is an Anglo Saxon thing. Europe as a whole does not fluoridate. Generally, European caries levels are at least on a par with fluoridated countries.

"Fluoridation of drinking water remains the most effective and socially equitable means of achieving community-wide exposure to the caries prevention effects of fluoride. It is recommended that water be fluoridated in the target range of 0.6-1.1 mg/l, depending on the climate, to balance reduction of dental caries and occurrence of dental fluorosis."

http://www.health.gov/environment/ReviewofFluoride/MAJfind.htm#assebene

"Fluoride has substantial benefits in the prevention of tooth decay. Numerous studies, taken together, clearly establish a causal relationship between water fluoridation2 and the prevention of dental caries. While dental decay is reduced by fluoridated toothpaste and mouth rinses, professional fluoride treatments and fluoride dietary supplements, fluoridation of water is the most cost-effective method. It provides the greatest benefit to those who can least afford preventive and restorative dentistry and reduces dental disease, loss of teeth, time away from work or school, and anesthesia-related risks associated with dental treatment.

In the 1940's, children in communities with fluoridated drinking water had reductions in caries scores of about 60 percent as compared to those living in non-fluoridated communities. Recent studies still reveal that caries scores are lower in naturally or adjusted fluoridated areas; however, the differences in caries scores between fluoridated and non-fluoridated areas are not as great as those observed in the 1940's. This apparent change is likely explained by the presence, in non-fluoridated areas, of fluoride in beverages, food, dental products, and dietary supplements."

http://www.york.ac.uk/inst/crd/pdf/summary.pdf

"The best available evidence suggests that fluoridation of drinking water supplies does reduce caries prevalence, both as measured by the proportion of children who are caries free and by the mean change in dmft/DMFT score."

Fluoride is poison. Why introduce this into our water system. This is not practiced in non Anglo Saxon countries. It is useless unless applied topically. Why have some US states reduced the concentration? Because it was endangering health. Is this discussion pertinent to the IOM btw? At the time this was on the cards I did shed loads of research. If people are really so easily taken in by research from one country then perhaps this is another reason to leave.

I'm not sure why you're still asserting that it's not useful when in water after I linked 3 studies that all show it is.

Lots of things are poisons, it's all dependant on quantity. Alcohol is poison. Oxygen will kill you. Too much water whether fluoridated or not will kill you.
