ans
I like to waste their time, but find I have more use for my own time than to go through that so I just ask them to wait a minute while I go to shut off some imaginary appliance that's stopping me hearing them properly and leave the phone on the side. No idea how long they wait, but I've never found one still there 15 mins later.
The Last Bulgam Miner
I like to waste their time, but find I have more use for my own time than to go through that so I just ask them to wait a minute while I go to shut off some imaginary appliance that's stopping me hearing them properly and leave the phone on the side. No idea how long they wait, but I've never found one still there 15 mins later. Thats not a bad idea - I might try that and take it a stage further, by going back to the phone every 2 or 3 minutes to apologise and say you will be with them in a moment - it might just keep the loser hanging on and I might break my record !!! Nitro
Just had a letter from "Satellite Direct UK ltd" They apparently will cover us for anything that goes wrong with our box, dish or remote, Sounds excellent but : They spelt Ramsey as "Ramsev" and also spelt our surname wrong, Oh and the more obvious thing is that we don't even have a sky box!!! Sheriff Buford T. Justice
I had a call tonight from someone like Satcare or Satcure so they said. I immediately became suspicious when, apart from being cold called in the evening, she told me that my Sky box was showing on their system as having it's insurance expire today. Playing along I told her I have three Sky boxes and asked her which one had expired and I get 'Oh.......Err' and she couldn't give me an answer. The only box I've ever had insurance on was the Sky+ box but never renewed it when it expired in about 2002. I could've played along more but couldn't arsed. I hung up shortly after as I was watching something. Shame really cos she sounded quite cute. The number she was phoning from was 01243 870882. Maybe I'll phone her back some time. Anyway, they're still out there so be warned.
Grianane
I keep getting Visa calls with special offers. They have to check your details and I always refuse to release any info over the phone on the basis that theirs no way I can confirm that the caller is genuinely representing the party they claim to be and that my security details are not going to be divulged to a cold caller. Despite the empasse this creates a foreign chap calling on behalf of MBNA (who I don't have a credit card from) kept going for 22 minutes last night. Deejay Denzel
I got left a message on my voicemail saying that a new company had taken over from my current home insurance firm and were offering me and adjustment of 4% less on my current payments for the same cover. All I had to do was to call them to agree to it. Looked up the number they left me and it was in the premium rate band!! If I did have home insurance then it would be very convincing! It wasn't a recorded voice talking either. They rang me later on again and hung up when i did answer. obviosly they are looking for the call back. Saltire
To get rid of unwanted callers selling double glazing or a new kitchen. When they ask if you are the homeowner, say no and that you rent and are on DSS benefits. Usually gets rid of them sharpish! Still waiting on a conservatory company to phone. That would be a good one to get the salesman out for a quote, as I live in a first floor flat!
Ushtey
I used to get these quite regularly so I called Sky to complain, thinking they had given out my number. The guy at Sky seemed to know all about it but then told me not to bother with the insurance as Dixons/Currys sell ordinary satellite boxes via the internet for £50 so it's cheaper to buy a new one which comes with 12 month warranty. Perhaps the only ever time of someone at a call centre actually being useful and not simply reading a script from a screen.
Sparky
Best ever yet I have heard of. A colleague whom I used to work with lived near a certain church and every other week would be bothered by people knocking on his door trying to convert him from the obvious heathen he was into someone else who would go knocking on doors every other week! One night after the sudden bereavement of his mother he snapped. What happened next landed him in trouble with the police. When the knock came and he saw who it was he invited them into the house and sat them down, after listening for 10 mins or so he asked if they would like a cup of tea and thinking they were making inroads they said yes. He walked out of the living room into the hall, locking the front door and taking the key and then into the kitchen, he filled the kettle up and switched it on before walking out of the back door, locking it behind him. He then spent the next hour and a half in the pub getting quietly pi**ed forgetting all about his visitors until the police walked in that is and asked anyone if knew who lived at no 73!! When he said yes they escorted him home to unlock the door and let the 'imprisoned people' out. After releasing them they asked if they would like to prosecute him for unlawful imprisonment or something to that effect, being the people they were they said on account that he had just lost his mother they would not proceed with any prosecution, but he did get a very stern warning from the police! This tale kept him in free beer for weeks. Obviously not a thing I would condone, you understand.
Dames Aflame
Easy way to solve all of these problems ---- unlisted number and don't ever give your home phone when doing anything online, filling out surveys, etc. Never get a single soliciting call...
