A planned facility to house elderly mentally infirm (EMI) people in the Isle of Man is axed because of budget pressures.

This whole development has been astounding. Nobody wanted it and it had plans pushed through by a minister after he'd lost an election despite advice to the contrary and now .. surprise .. no EMI Unit. Was there ever funding agreed? Why make an EMI Unit a planning condition when you have no budget to build it?

So thats 40 houses rather than the planned 26 on that plot then?

I appreciate that Eddie Teare MHK probably doesn't write his own press releases but I fail to see how the DHSS can be 'committed to providing the best quality service and care to anybody in need.' if they don't actually provide that service for the elderly mentally infirm who need it.

It sounds like the sort of thing you find in a Mission Statement but it doesn't translate into action.

Presumably some of these elderly people were encouraged to come and retire on the island but little thought has been given to what would happen later in their lives. Many of these people are vulnerable because they don't have relatives over here who could speak up for them

As regards 'providing the best quality service and care ' the same thing happened over the recall breast-screening service. The DHSS say they want to provide the best service but in the meantime people who were due to have screening last November and December have not been able to make appointments because of the new system that is being brought in.

So at the moment the breast-screening service is worse than it was this time last year.
