salvery was supposed to have been abolished yet now we hear that there are some 400 or so "employees" of local businesses who are being paid less than the minimum wage - these people are slaves - slavery is illegal - what is the Government doing about it.

but the Treasury can't divulge who the salve masters are cos it would be a breach of data protection bollocks. So the message is to unscrupulous employers go ahead and employ people at less than minimum wage cos authorities can't touch you cos of bollocks red tape.

Excuse my language but you really are fucking muppet. Slavery is being taken from your home, usually by forceful means, and made to work in appalling conditions. Historically it was obviously Africans to other parts of the world (which the Isle of Man was involved with and which made places like Liverpool rich). More recently its innocent girls from Eastern Europe being tricked into prostitution in the west. Someone getting paid less than the minimum wage is, not even using your ridiculous imagination, slavery. Yes it is illegal and the appropriate authorities need to address the problem but it simply isn’t slavery, are they being forced to work?

The IOM was involved in and benefitted from the Slave Trade. Its about time someone said sorry - on behalf of the people of the IOM and the Speaker is the person to do it.

Topic merged into this one - no need for two utter bollocks threads.. (try drinking a few beers less next time - you're clearly just in from the pub and pissed!)

Slavery - the state of being under the control of another person.

Slavery - work done under harsh conditions for little or no pay.

The reality is that we're all slaves to the system, otherwise we'd starve - try not going into work for a few months and let the bills mount up! Whatever happened to all this extra leisure time we were supposed to be getting?

Utter tosh!

The people of the Island today had nothing to do with the slave trade and have nothing to apologise for. I am constantly appalled by such ridiculous 'political correctness'.

The 'sins' of the fathers are NOT visited upon the sons.

There are hundreds, thousands, millions of events that have occurred throughout history that may be considered reprehensible by today's standards and to demand apologies from a society that has moved forward a couple of hundred years is pointless.

If the IOM has to apologise, then so should the tribal leaders of the west coast of Africa for their complicity in feeding slaves to the traders at the ports. Interesting programme last week in which a black Briton traced his Jamaican slave ancestry back to Nigeria and found some uncomfortable truths about 'the trade'.

Well, ok - that's Slavery covered, but what about Salvery? Will Salve Masters be allowed to continue practising their art of greeting? Is travel to Salve no longer allowed ? What would Caesar say about that, or the Corpy?..
