I'm sure that the DOT, like any other great department of State, must be financially governed by the 'if you don't spend your budget by the end of the year you will lose it next'. There has been an alarming appearance of totally superfluous road signs in the past few months that are serving no useful purpose and are blots on the landscape. The latest I've spotted is on the straight running into Lower Foxdale from St Johns where a dip in the road, that has probably been there since the road was constructed ghod knows how many years ago, has now merited a DOT signpost to tell us all of a 'Hidden Dip'. How has the human race survived for so long by not knowing that!

 

And on the subject of that strectch of road, the great COVERT SPEED LIMIT IMPOSITION CAMPAIGN scored another success with the extension by 500m of the 40mph that used to end just south of the Hope crossroads. Why? It is a wide, well surfaced main road with only 3 rural abodes that are set back from the road. The Island will get an all Island speed limit by stealth; inch by inch limits will be extended and before you know it they'll all join up!

the speed limits have been extended in both directions - one to past the amenity centre entrance (probably a good idea) - the other to cover the side road that joins at the Hope crossroads - there appears to have been an increased traffic down this road (? more housing ) which has a very poor sightline towards Foxdale. Speed limits have been extended over quite a bit of the Foxdale road with only a small amount derestricted

TBH the DoT are among the worst for making life confusing. Take the Roundabout at the top of Anagh Coar, coming from B&Q travelling straight on, according to roundabout best practise, you should be in the left hand lane and take the outside route across. But no, the DoT decided that you should use the right hand lane, and completely negate the need for 2 lanes on that section of the roundabout.

 

This is not an isolated situation either, time and again the DoT make up the rules for traffic as they go along.

There is a bit of sense to it, in that that turn down past Anagh Coar is usually backed up, so for those wanting to go straight over the roundabout they use the right hand lane coming from B&Q, by pass the queue down to Anagh Coar then move back into the outer lane to exit. Only a bit of sense you see, because the numpties still come onto the roundabout from the south and so block entry from the B&Q side in any case!

Regardless of their (quite understandable) good intentions, they have still moved away from the well documented roundabout layout with their design.

Responding to manxforums pressure, growing concerns for the safety of horses and riders on public roads, and unease over the misuse of roundabouts, the DoT will tomorrow reveal full plans for the innovative new "Equestrian Roundabout Lane" in the Isle of Man Courier.

 

In a press release DoT spokesman, Mr Horace Oatts states, "It is envisaged that recycling the horse manure deposited at the roundabout will generate the power to light the 153 additional road signs that the system will require. This installation will complete phase one of the Quarterbridge Redevelopment Scheme."

The DoT's standard excuse explanation for new limits is that they have received a "request by local residents" - if only one letter arrives asking for it, they'll jump into action, but if no letters against it arrive, then they get away with it.

 

This constant over-regulation is completely killing traffic - sad to see that some departments are unable or unwilling to evolve and try new strategies...
