Messing About On The River

A Slovenian man has battled piranhas, crocodiles and exhaustion to become the first person to swim the entire length of the Amazon river.

Martin Strel, 52, completed the 5,265-km (3,272-mile) marathon in 66 days when he neared Belem, 2,440km north of Rio de Janeiro, on Saturday.

Mr Strel, known as "fish man", was suffering dizziness, nausea, diarrhoea and sunstroke as he neared the end.

He has previously completed the Yangtze, Mississippi and Danube.

Apparently he claims that he won't go near the one in Egypt - but it may be that he's just in denial.

Daft sod would have done it in a quarter of the time if he'd swam downstream.

Daft sod, read the article and you'll find that he did

Hey - I saw the joke so went for it OK.

Maybe I should have said it beats the Irish 363 day upstream effort.

The Nile's got all that Bilharzia horror story that swims up your jap's eye and kills you. I think I'd prefer to take my chances with the piranhas!

Dunno about that, but the amazon has the Candiru - which swims up there then gets stuck inside your piece, thanks to a spine on its dorsal fin.

Nice.

Beware! The candiru......
