gilf_uk
Free wifi is hardly a work in progress though, there's loads of hotspots around the island (think there's a thread on this forums with a list, do a search). What risks are associated with the service provider? What exactly would they be prosecuted with? As for civil filesharing suits - you often need more evidence than an IP for a home network, if it was an open access point then unless they find some evidence to show you were involved then it's a no-brainer. If you offer a service and someone committs a crime using it, you can be held responsible for it unless you can prove that you weren't responsible for it. Someone using your wifi service with no means to identify them could leave you wide open to prosecution, and I assume that unless you could prove it wasn't you you could still be arrested. If your a company providing a service, then the directors or those in charge would be liable for prosecution. It's a grey area, and i by no means know the in's and out, but if you have a look at this article it gives you an insight into what is happening (although, these people were stealing wifi, the risks involved to those being robbed are highlighted) http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/england/herefor...rcs/6565079.stm
feelslikeitshould
Filters set up on the wifi routers maybe? Anthoo, i am looking forward to pizza hut, all you can eat buffets! Yeah - but nothing is 100% effective so why take the risk? But yes - the lunchtime buffet would go down a treat - £5.99 for pizza, pasta, salad and juice. It was my daily main meal when I was a student lol! Man, you must've been one rich student, £5.99 a day!? I spend that a week on food, including chocolate. What am I saying, I don't eat food, I live off chocolate and my flat mates bread that I toast so I can make the loaf last until it's nearly mouldy! I wouldn't swap that for a minging pizza from Pizza Hut though. And Starbucks is a rip off expensive, tastes like Kenko, no worse, Nescafe. You could buy a jar and have 20 cups for the price of a regular Americano in there.

Laughs, ok maybe not every day but you couldn't beat it for value - the salad bar alone was worth £5.99 especially when you compare it to the likes of Indigo red where the large box costs £4 and you MUST be able to close the box. I don't think the pizza is minging, i quite like it, especially the stuffed crust. It has it's place in the market and if you don't like it you won't go there. I personally cannot stand McDonalds or KFC, I think they are disgusting, but I've always thought of Pizza Hut as more of a restaurant that fast food. As for Starbucks, I'm sure there will be 3 on strand street, 2 on Victoria Street, 1 either end of Athol Street and one in the middle before too long. But thats progress, we don't get to pick and choose it, and at the end of the day if you don't like it don't go there, support the local guys. Moghrey Mie
So basically there's at least 1 coffee shop/cafe in each street: Spill the Beans, The Caff in Lord St, the one in Duke St, Dukes, The Buttery, M&S, Costa and Tower House. Oh and the one where Tony's used to be in the Victoria Arcade. Just remembered: it's called the Refinery. Nice proper butties as well. I had lunch at the Refinery last Thursday - nice smoothie - yes - nice buttie - yes - terrible service - yes. It's a shame but again, the service in many of the places you've named above falls short of what would be the norm in the UK. FUCK OFF BAD SERVICE Perhaps everybody who works in retail or catering on the island should have to take a basic one day course in customer service. What happened to the Manx welcome??????? La_Dolce_Vita
Customer service is crap in most places these days and not just on the Island. People don't complain enough. Shame about Starbucks if it comes to the Island. It is just tacky and overpriced. I can see the attraction for the Douglas yuppies 'cos it's quicky and easy to get coffee and snack. Though I have never liked Strand 53 that much, especally since it seems a little rough I think it bad that it might go. Less places for people to go so what few remain at the weekend will just get even more crammed. Though it seems the way the Island is going. All the big pub/clubs are closing leaving small, flash looking bars. I wouldn't want to spend a night at the weekend stuck in Cest La Vie, Amber, or whatever Jeffersons is now for more than an hour. What is the Manx welcome?
Cret
There's nowhere in strand street where you can sit and watch the world go by other than Dukes, Capones? Dunno if it's any better but similar fare I would have thought. Never even set foot inside Dukes. Don't do caffs/diners generally as I prefer to have peace & quiet when I eat if possible. the mo beats experience
Strand58 and the Waterloo are going because of the smoke ban. Any Brewery bar without a decent outside area is likely to follow the same route, and the lucky pubs will be allowed to sell food. The Island is going to turn into a shit place to go out very soon. gilf_uk
That's accessing an unauthorised private network, which I totally agree should be illegal. What does that have to do with a open network offered as a service? I know that - but if you read the article (and what I said in the piece before the link) it talks about people downloads illegal porn being very difficult to trace, the same applies to an open network - the person providing the network would be ultimately responsible if someone uses it to download something illegal. THEREFORE, steps have to be taken to ensure that you can trace the people accessing it, i.e. providing debit/credit card details or getting people to register first. Karellen
Shame about Starbucks if it comes to the Island. It is just tacky Whats the anti-Starbucks sentiment all about? Its just a coffee shop, no different to Costa which nobody seems to bitch about. Its not tacky, it has a counter and tables and chairs and is organised and (in London anyway) has nice Polish baristas who smile when they serve you. Is this bitching just the usual anti anything american?
