A police car or bike in front, and another behind. Let everyone know that they have to leave the course immediately as soon as the escort comes through. DOT can follow up with the cones. Just my simple opinion but I guess there may be more reasons than I'm aware of that make it unplausible. Stav. Last Ten Posted May 27, 2007 Share Posted May 27, 2007 Slightly off Rhumsaa's topic but on the same TT theme, I went up the TT Grandstand last night to take some pictures and it was absolutely laden with officialdom, people swaggering around in official sponsors shirts and telling people you cannot be here and sit down and basically pissing the general public off! rallybug Posted May 27, 2007 Share Posted May 27, 2007 And as I was coming down off the Mountain (thank goodness we were in a car, not on a bike or on foot waiting for the Pro-Tours bus to pick us up!), there weren't any cones at all at Brandywell - I'm 99% sure that there were supposed to be some there Why they need to put a cone down every 2 feet I don't know - a solid wall of them across the closed lane, then one every 5 or 10 feet would do the job, I would've thought. Rhumsaa Posted May 27, 2007 Author Share Posted May 27, 2007 I suspect what andrew was getting at is not that the marshals are expected to be traffic management (although we are responsible for no spectators on a closed road near us) but how can you just let marshals off the mountain and keep spectators up there or do you allow spectators to come off onto a closed road - personally I'd just take everyone off as at the end of sitting on the mountain for 3/4 hours all anyone wants is to get to a warm drink and meal. On the signs front I know a lot of signs are up all the time anyway - the ones that aren;t are taken down for safety reasons in case a bike comes off Link to comment Share on other sites More sharing options...

I understand that the vehicles involved in the cone placing (two of them I believe) were hired from the UK. I wonder if the Isle of Man Government have ordered the vehicles with X amount of cones, presumably 5,000 to be placed and removed at specific points and times of the day (The Contract) Then I wonder if the contractors charge an amount for laying each and every individual cone and have instructed their guys to ensure that all cones are placed, even if they do not actually need to place that quantity. WilDDog Posted May 27, 2007 Share Posted May 27, 2007 So as well as giving up their time for their sport your now expecting the marshalls (still unpaid) to undertake the role of the Police and the DOT by making sure spectators don't use the open public road inappropriately. No wonder they are having trouble getting new marshalls. Boredom -- Once a road is closed it's up to the police not the D.O.T to enforce it. The one way system will be enforced by the police. Marshals are given the same powers as a police constable to do the job for practicing and racing. So its ok for a member of the public to potentially take a few badly placed signs and signposts out. But if they're in a dangerous spot they have to come down for the race? That's just plain stupid. New poles and signs were erected for the one way system, some of these will be just before hazardous locations to warn the general public what to expect, normal public road signage that comes with any road layout changes. These will have to be removed before practice and racing and put back after, probably removed by the D.O.T. The other signs that Rhumsaa was referring to. I think, would be the fixed signage that's there all the time. These poles and signs will have safety bags in one form or another attached for the TT. If these signs are on the racing line as some are, they will have to also be removed, some of these signs are moved by D.O.T and some by the marshals I presume. If you watch the D.O.T on Parliament square when they close the road they have to remove the fixed poles and signs (probably 9 or 10) and put them back when practice or racing is finished, the same now applies to a lot of poles and signs on the mountain. andrew Posted May 28, 2007 Share Posted May 28, 2007 After many meetings between different people yesterday, I understand that a plan has been reached for most of the marshals to come down off the mountain before the cone laying begins. After the last TM has gone through, two TTMA vehicles will proceed over the mountain at around 30mph and the marshals vehicles will join the convey IN BETWEEN these two vehicles. I understand that some marshals will be asked to remain on the mountain just enforce no spectators going onto the course until the roads open car goes over once the cone laying is finished.
