As a visitor to the island, the last time I went through the Groves Rd Junction was about October.

My abiding memory wasn't particularly of the actual lights, but the lane positioning. If heading from Quarterbridge, you move to the right hand lane to go straight on. But if I remember it does seem kind of close to the offside lane coming in the opposite direction for traffic turning right! It's as if they just didn't have enough room for what they wanted to do with this junction.

For most junctions like this, the straight on lane, doesn't usually put you head on with oncoming lanes.

Minor changes to Groves Road/

New Castletown Road junction

This month will see minor modifications to the traffic light

displays and road markings on the New Castletown Road

approaches at this busy junction.

The refurbishment of the traffic lights at this junction was

completed in May 2007 prior to the commencement of the

TT festival and has successfully reduced the lengths of

queuing traffic at this location.

However, some motorists have experienced difficulties with

the use of separate traffic lights for individual lanes of traffic,

maintaining the correct road position while passing through

the junction and waiting at the stop line until the green arrow

displaying their intended direction of travel is illuminated.

The new layout and traffic light displays have been the

subject of debate both politically in the House of Keys and in

the media.

The Department has monitored traffic conditions and driver

behaviour at this junction since the junction capacity was

increased and the following minor changes will be carried out

in January to simplify the traffic light information displayed

to motorists:

• The traffic lights for individual lanes of traffic on new

Castletown Road will be modified and a single red

traffic light with a ‘left turn’ filter arrow will now be

used to control traffic approaching from Quarterbridge.

A single red traffic light with a ‘straight on’ filter arrow

will now be used to control traffic approaching from

Anagh Coar

• Additional road markings will be installed within the

traffic light controlled junction to guide the flow of traffic

through the junction and prevent motorists cutting across

the paths of other vehicles

These alterations will decrease the flow of traffic through

the junction when the pedestrian crossing facilities on

Groves Road and New Castletown Road in the vicinity

of Ballaughton Close are requested by members of

the public.

However, the changes will reduce the number of incidents

when vehicles pass through red traffic lights.

see my post of August 11th which says

I think the solution to the lights at Groves Road junction is for the south-bound traffic to only have a left filter arrow into Groves Road (no red & amber lights as these tend to be misinterpreted by the ahead lane).

For the north-bound lanes, have red/amber/green on the right lane (which also serves as a global red), and just an ahead filter green arrow on the left lane to allow ahead traffic when the opposing lane is green.

This then becomes more like the standard setup where we all know how it works.

Also, extend the white lane marking on the southbound left lane to a point level with the end of the kerb (like a formula1 pit-lane exit line) to prevent southbound traffic cutting across too soon

so do they read the forum ? :P

I believe that the DoT Highways statement means, "Oops, we are hanging our heads in shame for not spotting the potential problems in the first place, before endangering lives by putting our cunning plan into action. However, we'll gloss over the fact that someone should have been sacked over this nutty idea, and just tell the gullible public repeatedly that we are making "minor" changes, so they'll never notice our blunder. (But we're going to make a proper abattoir of Braddan Bridge and Governor's, if they let us get away with it)"

They don't mention the cost of these 'minor changes'

Just be aware of a defect in the light sequence if you are travelling northwards with a green 'ahead' filter arrow lit, and if there is no 'right turn' traffic, that the green filter will extinguish without warning leaving you running a red light. If there is no right turn traffic it omits the green-amber-red sequence.

Now that they have got rid of the temporary traffic lights and most of the road has been finished, have they missed a golden opportunity to remove the 'bottleneck' at the bottom of the hill by taking the footpath behind a couple of trees and taking a foot or two of the land to make two proper width lanes up to the traffic lights instead of the narrows which exists at present ?

I hear that Hannay will be on MR with Stu this week so wonder what great disruption he is planning now up to TT week !

i went by this morning and thought exactly the same thing!

great minds eh!

it's like they never sit back and think of the bigger picture when they crack on with these things. Let's face it, it took them an inordinately long time to finsih that whole road.

Nah. Its deliberate. They love bottlenecks so much they are building them into every roundabout entry now in the mistaken belief that they slow traffic down.

How will they get him up the steps into MR?

IOM likes to be that little bit different.

Although it remained 'polite,' Hannay got the kind of questioning he deserves (assuming that neither the Gestapo or the Inquisition are currently operating). Nice one, Stu. :)
