Politicians And Senior Civil Servants Squabble Over Car Parking Spaces

The triangular patch of land behind Government Offices that was used as a plant site during the re-construction of the Wedding Cake and attached buildings has lain unused since the building works were completed. Apparently there is an intense squabble going on about who should use it for designated parking spaces - politicians are claiming it and senior civil servants want it too not forgetting the judiciary of the nearby court buildings. IMO none should get it and it should be made into a open space public recreational park area with some trees and seating - IMO Mr President of Tynwald or Mr Speaker should show a lead and initiate some action on an otherwise piece of drab waste-ground. (unless of course they are involved in wanting a close by parking space!!)

Agreed - then they would know what its like to be an ordinary man in the street trying to get to work without privileges paid for by the public - maybe then more effort and investment would be made in public transport.

Juan Watterson gets the bus in most mornings.

so it is him - well done on him.

So why can't the others from out of town?

Can you see Pam Crowe on a bus? I can imagine she'd be asking for a special reserved seat for her exclusive use.

Maybe its the security service that otherwise can't provide adequate personal body-guard services for politicians traveling on public transport and who might be under threat of being accosted by ordinary members of the public with legitimate concerns over what is happening in Tynwald and the Keys.

Top politician from Casteltown has been dreaming about going to work using the bus service - but the problems are:1) he doesn't recognise what the bus looks like, 2) where it goes from, 3) how long it takes, or 4) what it costs, and anyway even if he got there how would he get back? the dream turned into a nightmare so he woke up in a sweat in case his privileged parking space got turned into a garden space.

Where's Casteltown? Sounds a bit Spanish.

Why the hell SHOULD politicians or civil servants use public transport? Like most of us they probably learned to drive to get away from having to organise your life around someone else's timetable. Can Juan Watterson drive? Maybe it's not such an altruistic choice!

This forum is getting more like the Politburo - pretty soon unless you walk to work, take regular exercise, have no ambitions to better yourself, don't smoke, don't drink, don't eat too much and don't use gas, petrol or electric, you'll be considered an enemy of the state!

Well said. It's much like Madonna et al telling me to stop flying as its killing the planet, I'm not the one with houses all over the globe!

As to that bag of shite concert yesterday, in technical terms (like the Diana one last week) it was a Big Audio Disaster - the sound quality was appalling. They obviously took too much carbon out of the system somewhere to make a point and ended up making an awful noise instead.

And what's with the Sky Movie channel (HD2) that's STILL feeding an audio surround feed to air instead of the main stereo mix - don't these goons LISTEN anymore?

I don't disagree people can use cars. I was taking the 'practice what you preach angle'. You can't advocate an integrated transport system, or insist people drive less and 'save the planet' etc., IMO, if you don't even know the number of the bus that could take you into work. Equally you will never know what's wrong with public transport if you never use it - or if you don't start work till Tuesday afternoon when the roads are fairly quiet.

Double standards! - from people who are not even the equivalent of borough councillors in the UK (going by the number of votes).

They are, however, the peole responsible for investment in our public transport system and, ultimately, for the efficient running of it. Would it be asking too much to suggest that they should use a bus/train or tram at least once a month so that they have some knowledge of it?
